busted doing 110 on i-95....
Ok so I was being a jackass and passed my buddy going 110 mph on I-95 outside of philly and wouldn't you know it, a cop was in front of him. The cop was really cool about it and gave me a careless driving ticket, which from what I've read carries 3 points in PA... I know it could have been worse, but my question is this; I still have a Virginia License; will the points transfer to Virginia? If I change my license to PA now, will it help or hurt me? Should I fight this? I feel like he gave me a break in a way.
Any help is appreciated...this is the 3rd ticket I've gotten since moving back to PA and I think I may be in some trouble...

I would call that a VERY BIG BREAK.
In Cal, the cops could have tossed you into the back of a squad car and you could be calling a lawyer from lock-up!
IMO, if you want to go to court, talk to an attorney. It sure would be rank to end up showing-up and having your "nice officer" show videotape of your 110 MPH speeds to a traffic judge... (I'm not saying that's going to happen, just find out...)

i don't think points transfer when you move. i had points when i moved from NJ to NC and they never showed up in NC. But once I moved back to NJ, the points were still there. What I did is i have licenses from both states and show the officer your VA license and tell him your a student or visitor. It might work.

Keep your VA license as long as possible if you plan on staying in PA.
Careless driving = a driver's failures to operate a vehicle with proper care based on the current road and weather conditions.
Generally speaking, (in PA) an initial accumulation of six (6) points will result in the driver being required to attend an approved driver improvement school, or undergo a special examination. Accumulations above six points will probably result in suspension of driving privileges.
You should have got a 3362 (31+) which would be 5 points and a departmental hearing. Instead you just get three points.

If it weren't for tornados, and 120 degree heat, I'd move there in a heartbeat =)

I agree, I don't see anything good about a point system but I guess that need it in some places, the driving is so bad. Out West, they go by number of incidents in a given time period.
I got a 110mph ticket in Texas years ago and it was just that, 55mph over the posted limit and $$$$. None of this multiple points, careless driving, or jail time which is :ghey:
I guess you were lucky.

Whether PA infractions will go on another state's record depends on the other state's rules. Look at the dept of motor veh's website for the state you have your license from. If no reciprocal agreement, then plead guilty and say "screw it." End of story.
I know in NYS, we get points on our license for infractions in Canada!! but not in PA, so your state may be the same.
Good luck.
BTW, I'm a lawyer and I wouldn't waste the money getting one b/c I don't think you need one, especially if you're still driving.

Can you believe that shit? The cop took the kid and smashed his face into the trunk. But that cop is screwed now so he'll get what he deserves from the courts.

Your points won't transfer, but I'd be very patient in trying to obtain a PA license within the next few years, this will be waiting for you at the PA DMV office, so thank VA and take your time transferring your drivers license.
BTW, send the cop some donuts and a thank you letter, you could have gotten fucked, but I think the LA incident kinda slowed him down a bit. Either that or he was just a nice ass guy.

NY does not transfer points from other states in US. it depends on state govt. some do, some dont... i get all the tickets i want in NJ and nothing shows up on my NY license. find out with ur local states... either their dmv website, or call...

thanks everyone for all the info; I think I'm just going to try and hang on to the VA license until it expires in sept. of 2003. Hopefully I won't get into any more trouble for that...
I did make a call down to the cops in VA and they said it will transfer but I don't know if this is actually true; everyone seems to think they don't. I ordered my driving record from VA though; so that should tell me if my last two tickets in PA transfered (I got them last October- 2pts each). If they actually did transfer; I'm hoping VA doesn't suspend me . In the mean time I think I'm gonna drive like an old man and not get into any more testosterone wars with my buddies...

I've taken defensive driving or deferred adjudication(probation)
so many times to keep tickets off my record. It's all about $$
Revenue for the city,county/state governments.
I'll pay the damn fine(speed tax) so they get their money but jeez don't screw me with my insurance too!
What state (Montana?)used to have no daytime speed limit (reasonable & prudent) until the FEDS threatened their highway money?
Apparently the fines there are still minimal.
The worst one I got busted for was 120mph in a 70 zone Nov. of '99.
I was decelarating from about 135-140mph. I thought for sure I was going to jail for reckless endangerment with a motor vehicle etc. BUT the cop was cool (more than a little pissed at first) & just wrote me the ticket & told me to slow my ass down!
I think since it was 5:30am, Sunday morning on a 5 lane freeway with no traffic he cut me some slack. I was sure afraid I would be calling my boss from jail!!
Anyway, paid the fine(about $100), lawyer fee($120) & 90 days probation that's it.
A guy I work with has a S2000 & got busted for 130mph in a 40mph zone(on Allen parkway for you Houstonites) & he got hauled to jail & then 1 year probation. He was on his way to break up a fight between his ex-wife & his current wife.
When he finally got home the cops where at his house on a domestic disturbance call because the neighbors had called & complained about his wives fighting! LMAO! He was not in a good mood that week!

Didn't Texas have/used to have the voucher system whereby you could pay for your speeding tickets in advance? I think you bought so many $$$ worth of vouchers and then whenever you got pulled over, you'd hand over a few "points". That way the State made money in advance before the violation, you could prepay for your speeding tickets, the traffic stops where more pleasant and the whole outcome was less unpredicatable. Sounds good to me....can I get about 100mph worth of "overs", please?
