Burnt Clutch?

So what does a burnt clutch smell like? Is it similar to the smell of burning oil?

yeah, i think my clutch has the same problem. usually when i drive somewhat hard in moderate traffic where my car has to drop between different gears, a burnt smell seems like its coming through the center air conditioning vents. its never really strong, but you dont look too good when the person next to you asks whats burning...

$3200?!?

they better have thrown in a complementary transmission for that kind of money...

the rear main seal is a $7.00 part, plus maybe 10 hours labor to drop the tranny/subframe and make the fix.

hell, a complete clutch replacement (pressure plate, friction disk, flywheel, labor) at dealer prices is only around half that, and that's including over $800 in parts!

I agree it sounds like he's got a leaking rear main seal, btw.

just for precuation in the distant future (hopefully not), how would you check for this, carboard under the car, or just take a look under the car when it's on the lift?

They did basically... including $700 for new gear set, and a WHOLE lot more then just the main seal and input shaft...

I love it when people only give part of the story

The rear main is a 7.00 part, and yes the main input shaft seal is about another 7 or so. The Gear sets I replaced were 750. The Trans must be completely removed and disassembled to change the main input shaft seal. If one is going out you could damage the other on the six speed if the clutch burns up and over heats from slippage caused by oil on the clutch. I also had to replace my clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate.

rondog,
Look where the tranny and engine connect. if you see fluid seeping out of the bottom you have a problem. There is also an inspection plate at the bottom of the clutch housing, part closest to the ground.

I took a look at mine when we had a couple people mention the RMS (rear main seal)... I just crawled under the car and looked at where the tranny and engine meet up. No ramps or lift involved. Cardboard trick would work too...

It's not that common of an issue (we've probably only seen a handfull of cases - i.e. under 5) for 6spd owners, but there was a TSB for the Accord and 01/02 CL's for a different RMS to be used.

Search for Rear Main Seal for more info...

Mc_yanzo complained about a RMS leak, but it ended up being something else....
