broken windshield

OK.. so i wake up and notice a 8inch crack in my windshield, on the passenger side from the bottom up. a rock (pebble) hit right below my wiper blade. i called acura and they said the part would be $600 + labor. now i have insurance but really dont want to use it on something like this since my deductible is $500. anyone know of a place in NOVA that i may be able to get this done cheaper? does it have to be an "ACURA" windshield or are they pretty much standard? ive never had this happen so i dont know where to begin and any help would be appreciated!

A stone hit comes under COMPREHENSIVE insurance, not COLLISION.
Are you saying that your COMPREHENSIVE deductible is 500 bucks?

WOW, that’s high. Mine is only 100.

If you do have to foot the bill, I would go to an auto glass specialist, not an Acura dealer.
They’re more experienced and probably cheaper.

I replaced my second windshield. The first time, I got the factory, I paid some $575 installed.

Now, the second one, I got non-Acura one, made by a company called Pdg. It looks exactly the same as the Acura's.

I paid US$250 installed. I did it here in Montreal.

Nashua.

I don't know about in "NOVA", but up here in Michigan, 99% of the windshield repair shops pay for your deductible. Look up the yellow pages. I bet there's at least some shops offering to pay for your deductible. I guess they just jack up the price a little bit and bill your insurance company.

This falls under comprehensive, and will not increase your insurance premium. So you won't have to pay a dime out of your pocket.

Good luck.

The only time I’ve heard of this is for REPAIR, not REPLACEMENT of the glass.
If they can REPAIR a small chip or crack that’s not in the line of sight, your insurance company will wave the deductible.
It makes sense for them because it’s cheaper then new glass plus labor.

What you’re talking about sounds illegal and I doubt they’d be putting that in the yellow pages.

not trying to go to jail over a few hundred dollars... the crack it too long to just repair anyway.

All these guys (Safelite, Banner, etc.) are franchises, except for a few local chains. That means that the quality of workmanship & service is as good as the local owner and can vary from shop to shop. Most of the windshields they carry are as good as Acura, so not much worry about the quality of the glass. They are always cheaper than the dealer because the dealer, 9 times out of 10, will sub it out to them anyway and then tack on his own profit margin.

Shawn,

what Pure Adrenaline is saying is that they cover your comprehensive deductible... we have that here in MN as well, you have your choice between that or a box of steaks. i'd take the steaks since my comprehensive deductible is ZERO.

I actually have glass coverage, so I didn't have to pay anything when I got the windshield replaced.

My CLS windshields ARE jinxed . I replaced the windshield for the second time on Saturday. This morning while coming from Montreal, I got hit by another flying rock, leaving a new 1/4" crack on brand new windshield .

I called the insurance and it would be repaired at no cost.

However, when I asked about lowering the comprehensive deductible to $100, my insurannce rate increased by some $65 /year for 2 cars !!! .. I was like ... I did it lower it anyways...

Now, if I have to replace the windshield for the 3rd time I will pay only $100 + ($65/yr) + +$250 I paid for the second one. Or, some $420...

A lesson to learn... just ask about deductibles!!

Back from the DEAD

I am draggin this one up because I got some very good info for you guys.

http://www.harmonautoglass.com/

These guys did AWESOME work on replacing my windshied.
Took about an hour. I went right to them.

They use PPG glass which is OEM.... they make windshileds for all the AUTO makers, including Benz, Porshe, GM, FORD..etc.

Myself and Chikai went in on a deal, but you can get the same deal. they did both of our Windshields for $225.00 (not including tax).. So my grand total was $240.75...

Not a bad price at all if you ask me..

They might charge a little more (I think 25) if they have to come to you, but they are completely MOBILE if need be, the place I went to has 4 trucks on the road and 1 tech at the shop..

I called at 10:30 A.M., the glass was delivered to their shop by 11:15 A.M.... I got it installed and I was out of there by 12:30 P.M..... 1 hour 15 minutes!!!!!!!!... amazing... I watched the guy from start to finish... I highly recommend them...

They cut out the old inspection & emmission stickers, so I have to go get new ones issued within a week or expect to be pulled over by ever cop in PA...LOL.. no big deal.. no extra charge for the stickers either.. they do a reissue and adhere the new sticker on..

Hope this helps some of you out..

Thanks for the info!

About insurance -- check your insurance to see if there is a separate auto glass policy. Many policies cover auto glass as a special issue with different rules/deductibles.

PPG is the OEM manufactor of 95% of all Auto makers, all Winshields have to fall under certain FEDERAL regulations and specifications...D.OT.

Your a complete SUCKER if you think that there is SO CALLED SPECIAL OEM glass for our cars...

Lets do a test... Go read the bottom drivers side of your front windshield and tell me all the words, letters and numbers and report back...

In FL, glass coverage is included in all full coverage policies. I had my windshield replaced in a another car for free. I didn't get the factory glass, but did go through 2 windshields casue the first one has distortions in it.

. go write down the numbers of your so called OEM windshield and report back. I will prove to you and Everyone else that reads this board that there is no SUCH THING AS OEM WINDSHILEDS... 95% of them are made by the worlds largest AUTOMOTIVE glass producer and shipped throughout the US and Canada... The only difference is the lettering that they stamp in the glass.. Some windshields have MERCEDES stamped in them and the stupid asses that own those cars insisit on getting the same thing that they had so they pay through the nose.

My point is that they all have to be D.O.T. Approved... Your glass in your car has no difference in quality then the one I just bought. all it has is a different set of bar codes, but as for thickness, specification of clarity, and D.O.T. approval they are the same.

I also just got my windshield replaced last week. On monday a rock hit the lower left corner of my windshield just below the wiper blade. On tuesday I had a 3 inch long crack, on wednesday the crack was a foot and half long and spreading.

So I paid the $100 comprehensive deductable for Allstate and a company called Golden State Auto glass came by thursday and relaced the entire windshield.

I am amazed that such a tiny impact(maybe a 2mm crater) could cause such a giant fissure in the glass.

I take it NOVA is Northern Virginia? I've had many windshields replaced because of stones and, yes, it does not effect your insurance rates. Plus, depending on who your insurance company is, you only pay a small copay to have it done.

At the very minimum, call your insurance company to find out what the cost/copay is...you never know unless you investigate and they don't do anything to your policy for just asking questions.

Also, from now on, if you can, get a glass-replacement rider added to your insurance. Its very minimal (like rental car coverage) and worth it when stuff like this happens.

I once got stuck behind a dump truck on I-395 and my windshield got hit 3 times from stones (3 separate cracks) (not in this car).

Glass

I had to replace my windshield about 4 months ago after a large piece of metal hit it! Anyway, I don't know where you are, but I used Triumph Auto Glass in San Diego - 866-554-4393. Total windshield and molding was around $240. Yes, $240! I was concerned with getting inferior aftermarket, but, ended up getting the exact same factory glass! Don't pay $600! Shop around if you can.

...reviving the thread... I'm in the same boat as the original poster.

I'm also in NoVA and got a nice crack in the windshield last night. Insurance says replacement means I pay deductible of $500 so that's out of the question.

I called the places mentioned here and others mentioned to me at work:
$514 - perfection auto glass
$550 - auto glass america
$390 - allstate auto glass

Turns out the 03 with navi is $100+ more expensive than the non-navi because of the onStar system. It apparently requires a different windshield which is more expensive

Anyone with an 03+navi had their windshield replaced? How much? The Allstate guy told me the glass costs him $300.
Any other shops recommended in Northern VA/DC/MD? I'm not going up to DE to get it replaced.

There is no tax on most things in DE, so I am surprised they charged you tax.

I had to have my rangers back window removed and resealed once, and then had the guy come back out cause it was still leaking inside the truck, but it was upper brake light that had the problem.

Some ins. co. offer winshield replacement as a part of the policy, it costs a little, but worth it.

Funny how PA makes you have to keep the cut out of your inspection sticker on the glass. Imagine turning a corner too fast and having it fly into the passengers head.

Nope. For repairs, the insurance company itself will waive the deductible.

For replacements, the glass company will pay your deductible. As far as I've heard, they just charge the insurance company more by paying for your deductible. It does sound illegal, and I don't know how they do it. I might be wrong, but I can grab a Southeastern Michigan phone book and find at least 10 glass companies offering to pay for your deductible. And yes, some companies do offer other options, such as the steaks mentioned.

My dad's about to get the windshield replaced on his XLD, and the deductible is only 50 bucks. He doesn't care if he pays it or not; he just wants to be sure that it will be an OEM glass, because he's seen some bad aftermarket windows with warps in them and whatnot. They distort your sight.
