Brief Flashing CEL... details inside...

I'm on my way home and I roll up to a new EVO at a light. We take off and by the time I hit 60 MPH near the top of 2nd gear I go from WOT to 75% throttle to 15% throttle because I had easily overcome the EVO.

So when I get to about 15% throttle the exhaust is making this burbling sound like it usually does under partial throttle in the vtec range. This time though, the EVO kept coming so I stomped on it again. Once I stomped it again the CEL started flashing so I slowed down and totally let off and coasted to the next light. Once I had stopped the CEL wasn't flashing anymore. It only flashed for about 10 seconds.

Well the EVO pulls up to me and says "Dude you totally shot a blue fireball from each of your mufflers after you pulled from me, that looked awesome."

So i'm assuming when this happened is when the CEL started to flash. I got home, no CEL. Stopped the car, turned off, turned back on, no CEL.

Is it possible the CEL was a random misfire from too rich/too lean? I'm assuming when I quickly dropped from WOT to 15% throttle in vtec in 2nd gear some extra unburnt fuel went into the exhaust for a brief second and then when I nailed the throttle it combusted?

This is the second time I've been told the car shoots fireballs and it is during the same off throttle/quick on throttle situation.

If I borrow my friends scan tool tomorrow will I still be able to read any stored codes?

Most likely just a momentary spike in fuel that is unburned, like you said. I would think that with the extra fuel pressure you are running since you are sc'd it makes it more likely to happen. Either that or a bad intake valve.

If I had a valve problem i'd think that I'd hear a valve tapping though right?

The only time the car has really hit the rev limiter since the S/C install is when the transmission doesn't shift from 2-3. Seems like a fairly common problem on the auto trans with a fairly large increase in power. Only happens with VSA on, break traction in the top of 1st gear and through the 1-2 shift. Then for some reason the car won't shift. Mattg and Serge also said they had the same experience.

I hope you get this thing figured out Steve. Do you have your AFR gauge hooked up yet? You must be dumping some serious fuel to get those flames out the back. And I'm sure your cat isn't liking you too much either.

Hopefully you'll get some stored codes that will give you some clues on what's going on. I wonder if you have a flaky FPR?

The AFR goes in Thursday.

I'm also waiting to hear back from Autometer regarding my fuel pressure sender for the gauge that went tits-up on me a few weeks ago.

Thats's the exact same problem i was having, well i still am having. If i break traction it wont shift, i posted something a while back on it. I went to the dealer but they said its fine. Everything is always fine with this damn car, like the trans was fine and the next day it failed on me.

Yep, at first I didn't know what the issue was. But i'm now able to avoid/replicate the problem.

VSA on, break loose going into 2nd gear and the transmission doesn't shift to 3rd either in D4, D5 or SS mode. The car will stay in 2nd until it drops below 5k rpms.

Pull the code. The same thing happen to me a few days ago after my Thermoblok install. CEL flashed at WOT in 3rd gear then went away.

I pulled a P1399 (Random multiple misfire)

Cleared it and it went away.

Oh BTW, my AFR was and is fine currently. I don't know what it was. Maybe it was a random occurance. It hasn't come back.

If you had a bent valve you would know it. Shitty idle, and with your sc it would probably cause catastrophic failure under boost. Another option is that there is just a very momentary point where the TPS isnt synched up exactly with the ecu. You may be fooling it briefly so thaat it causes a very rich concition, and then when you floor it immediately afterwards you get the backfire.

The flasth is for 'random misfires'. It throws a temporary code (1399) and if it happens again, throws a permanent code (1399).

Now, is there anything wrong with this? Could this lead to problems? Mechanically speaking...

Thanks,

Now if it happens again like in a few days will it throw the permanent code or do you mean if while it is flashing it misfires it will throw the permanent code.

The CEL must be from the bubble in your Pirelli's man ... Don't want to drive to Fairfax but racing an EVO with the bubble? Just be careful. I want to see the fireballs too though!

Sounds like you got what us race fans call LEAN POPS, are you supercharged? If you are this is normal on deceleration only. I've blown complete exhausts off at the end of the 1/4 mile track, ever watch F1 racing up close nothing but blue out of the exaust coming into a turn. POP POP POP POP POP

I wouldn't worry about it except for catt damage.

It isn't during complete deceleration, but when I go from like 50-70% throttle to 10-15% throttle while in vtec it'll make burbling sorta poping noises.

And yes I'm supercharged.

funny how once you own a blower it's the rear bank of plugs that become the easy ones to change

When I pulled the code, my A/F was fine @ WOT ~12.3-5. Random lean condition maybe?
