Break in question

The guy who will be doing the mods on my ride said to change the oil after 1500 miles, dealer says 4700 mile due to an additive in the oil that aids break in. Also, the Faq site(clod the wacko) states to keep the rmps< 4500 rmps. I'm telling ya it is impossiple to do. I "tap" the gas and i'm gone. Does this refer to extended acceleration?

Here we go again............

Some of the guys here changed out at 3K and are using synthetic oil..

I have had 2 Accords (new) and now my CL-S. I was advised by more than 2 people from Honda that I trust not to change out the oil early due to the additive which helps in the break-in process.
I did follow it and just just changed my oil at 7,500 miles.

Follow the manual. Trust the people who actually built the car..

IMO

There is that issue of how the car is driven after that first 1000 miles. The manual does NOT state that the "break in" oil should be left in for a full 7500 miles. If you are putting a lot of miles on the car in a short period of time, why not go for it.

OTOH, if someone is only putting on 2000 miles a year, then waiting 3 years (or longer) to change the "break-in" oil is crazy!

Time is a factor worth considering.

I just don't understand how the manual’s extended service interval now became the "rule book" for all drivers.

So, what I'm saying is this:

If you like to follow the break-in at 7500 miles and it works for you -- go for it. If someone is doing lots of cold starts and stop-and-go driving AND does a ton of high rev driving, then I see no reason why they shouldn't just swap the oil out at 1000 miles. The actual engine wear is based on the distance the pistons travel NOT odometer’s mileage reading. The distance that the pistons travel is related to the rpm NOT the odometer...

For example:

I could coast down a hill for 7500 miles (one heck of a long hill) and I guess I should change my oil (even though the engine is idling at 750 - 1200 rpm).

OR

I could drive around a small track with the revs sitting up at 4000-6900 rpm (with varying load and rev changes)…

The piston’s would move a completely different distance in each case...

-- This is just something to consider...

Kinda agree EricL

but you are throwing in non normal driving situations. Sure! If you only drive 2 miles a year... how many of us do that???

Obviously, I am talking for an average driver...

You seem to want to go to extreme drivers situations?????? Besides, why would you think that you know better to override the manual from the car manufacturer????

So, I guess, I'm an extreme driver... Since I have low mileage on my car...

What is average and what is high and what is low?

The manual has always pointed to "minimums", when referring to maintenance items.

If the manual says, "Change the timing belt at 60,000 miles", do you think that you will be "punished" if you change it at 40,000 miles? Or do you think you will be "thrashed" (by Acura) if you wait till 100K miles (and it breaks before that time).

Have a look in the Helms -- it has TWO schedules:

1. Maintenance schedule for severe conditions (meaning lots of short hops, etc, etc):

Replace oil and filter: 3,750 miles
Then there is a mileage/time item at 7,500/6 months: Replace engine oil and filter

See page 3-6 and 3-7 in Helms

IMO, the schedule refers to "Do this service or operation by this mileage or date" NOT "Please don't do the service or operation before this date"...

BTW, to this day, I’ve had anyone show me the page in a manual that says to leave the break-in oil in the car for 7,500 miles. And I called Acura Care more than a few times on this issue.

Some factors to consider first.
Weather, It doesn't get to freezing in South FL.
Type of driving. For me I drive HW most of the time, 20-30 miles a day.
Is it leased or bought? Mine is Leased. I got it in December, & just after 600 miles, I took a 3000K mile road trip. I now have just over 4500 miles. For me the manual says 7500, the dealer said 7500 so I'll change it at 7500. It is afterall not my car but Acura's. I don't want to spend money that may not be needed on oil changes for a car that's not mine. And if something goes wrong, then It's Acura's problem not mine, because I'm following the owners manual, & dealer's recomendation.

Now If I wasn't in FL, & somewhere cold, & drove differently, & even if the car was leased, I would do the 3750 miles service.

That's the nice thing about not having the Taliban "approve" your car maint.

Do what makes you happy....

I probably was too harshly trained to take care of other people stuff as well as my own -- that's my problem.
