brand new RX-8

So I'm driving home from the store tonight and roll up behind a brand new red RX-8 - still has the paper tags. We look at each other and then split to be on other side of a conversion van at the red light. Goes green and we're off. We were dead even at 90 when we had to slow down for the next light. Too much traffic to try again and then he pulled in to his neighborhood.

2 things:
My car ('01 CL-S stock) either has horrible brakes or I haven't tried them 90-0 before tonight. He was able to slow down in about a third the distance of me.

And I thought the RX-8s were much faster than that. Maybe he didn't really push it since it was new, or maybe he didn't really think I would run with him - I'm surprised.

Anyway - first race in the car (bought 1/31/05) and I'm pleased

They aren't as fast as you think in a straight line.

The RX-8 isn't as fast as it should be, it is a disappointing car. I would take a RX-7 TT anyday ..

^^ Wouldn't call it a kill but nice race!! Yeah, our brakes are pretty bad and, with a stock 4x4 suspension, can lead to some scary stops on uneven surfaces.

^^ In the "silver lining" school of thought, I'd call this a kill since it took me longer to break. By that time I was at least 2 car lengths ahead of him

If you want more races, troll 175 and Snowden on any given night after 8pm... there's always a ton of people in modded cars in that area it seems.

Actually, this was crossing 175 leaving BJs/Bestbuy. My friend and I used to race around there all the time - amazing who will overlook an all black sleeper '83 VW GTI that's heavily modded.

A ton of DUBS guys meet at the Krispy Kreme on Snowden there every Tuesday night. I dropped by one time to say hi to the guy who beat me in his S60R before I had the HBP.

The RX-8 really isn't meant to be a drag car. On the other hand, the handling and the brakes are amazing.

Mazda just came out with an ECU reflash for the 8 that seems to give it a lot more low end and mid-range punch. I'm watching the RX-8 boards to see if anybody gets better numbers at the strip.

I doubt we'll see too many low 14 RX-8s though.
