brakes seem soft

i just changed my brake pads myself and now when i brake i have to push the pedal all the way down to come to a full stop. any ideas why this might be?

Was this front or rear brakes?
If it was just front brakes they should just adjust as pressure is built up, unless you installed them wrong or have a leak.
If it was the rear brakes you changed there is a tool and adjustment needed for e-brake play and if maladjusted you will get a spongy low pedal.
Also if you didn't machine or replace the rotors and just replaced pads the new pads take awhile to mesh to the old rotors, I always replace pads and rotors and do some hard braking to break them in, because sometimes new pads and old rotors never mesh properly its better safe than being cheap and dead
