brakes getting too hot

yesterday when i got back home from work, i wanted to get rid of some bird crap on my car so i sprayed some water on my car.. well some of it got on to my wheels and it started steaming.. i sprayed some more on the wheels and it made sizzling noise when water got on the brakes.. only the front brakes though.. not the rear brakes.. i was driving on the highway for about 45 mins and local roads for 15 mins driving normal before i noticed this.. didn't brake any more than usual.. is this normal?

yeah your brakes are fine. the whole principal of brakes is friction so therefore with friction there's going to be heat and plus it being hot and all the road heat it's going to be hot. don't lose sleep over it. enjoy driving your CL-S

Congratulations on warping your rotors.

what mt6forlife said...

don't do that ever again. That's how rotors get warped. When soft heated metal is cooled down extrememly fast, it has a tendency to harden deformed.

but don't worry, it's normal for them to get that hot.

Rotors heat up, especially with the original CL pads (see TSB10170?). As mentioned above, you don't want to spray water on them as it will cool them off too fast, and may warp them. YMMV

i already had my rotors resurfaced.. for free of course.. but they didn't get warped from spraying water on them.. this was my first time spraying water on the brakes.. and obviously it was the last time.

Oh come on! And what do you do if it starts to rain? Pull over, or not use your brakes? Here in Florida we frequently go from 95 degree scoarching hot to a sudden down pour. That is basically the same thing as spraying water on your brakes hot! From what I understand the older 01 CL's had a mismatched brake pad material that was warping the rotors because they got to hot. That is what the TSB is all about.

I think the difference is that rain water isn't being sprayed on the rotors at high pressure and volume. Its that shock of being hit with tons of cold water than warps them.
