Brakes - CL - 2001

So my 2001 CL is @ the dealer's getting a new tranny.... the service ops manager called me right now and tells me that that my rear brakes are going.... I asked him how much to fix them.... he says 400 just for the rear ones... tells me the roters need to be resurfaced.... Is that a good deal? Or should I take it to some other place like Just brakes or Manekie?

Dealer is always going to be more expensive then anywhere else. Who the hell resurfaces rotors anymore? They should be replacing them with new ones for that price too. I'd look elsewhere personally (or do it yourself and save a lot of money). Should cost about $100 if you did it yourself for the parts.

Good Lord!!! $400.00 to resurface rotors and cheap pads that they use? WTF F-that dude. You might as well take it to brakes plus, just as good of a job at a fraction of the cost. I would just do it myself. But you might not be into that kind of thing.

I'd tell that dealer to get bent! After the tranny was done of course!

For $50-$100 more you could have some OE size slotted rotors and good ceramic pads that are far more efficient than the OE discs. The ROTORA rotors and ceramic pads work very well on the CL. It will improve braking and will be much more resistant to warping than the OE setup.

Of course that doesn't include labor but if you have any mechanical ability it is easy to do and there are plenty of DIY thread online.

Take it to your favorite shop and have them replace the rear pads with a premium aftermarket product and resurface the rotors. It's just the rears, so I wouldn't bother upgrading.

Cost should be under $200 parts and labor.

Yup you don't need to spend $50 to $100.00 bucks more than the dealers alredy stupid crazy price. Like he said they are just rears. Your fronts do 80% or more of the work. You might even be able to get it done for around a $150.00 parts and labor!

I'm in the process of redoing ALL my brakes; rotors, pads, shoes, clips, etc. Tired of F-ing around with Honda's piss-ass brake components.

Good luck. I personally would NOT resurface the rears. Just replace new. I'd also DIY, but understand that everyone doesn't want to or is able to do it.

I feel your pain.

Resurfacing the rotors is fine as long as you use a non-directional finish. It's important that the quality of the finish is between 40 to 60 microinches as recommended by many OEMs.

Unless the rotor was warped, there isn't much of a difference between a new and a resurfaced rotor; any difference is going to be the quality of the finish.

Rear rotors can be replaced by removing the caliper bracket after the pads are removed, and removing the two screws on the hub using an impact driver.

are 2001 cl rotors even able to be cut?? They are really thin to begin with. $400 from the stealership is too high

From my experience, the rear rotors tend to wear very little, especially with the OE pads. I measured the rear rotors from a 01 TL after 70k and it was only a few thousandths less than new.
