Bought my 6MT yesterday..deal of the century!!!
Just drove back from ATL with my new 6MT. Craigslist ad is still up:
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/cto/1449972323.html
Drives like a dream and got it for a steal because I asked about the paint and exterior blemishes and no response from seller. Judging from the miles, I took the silence to mean there were no. Flew down, one way, and they picked me up from the airport. car has some clearcoat issue on the hood, some wheel rash on two wheels, multiple chips and some repair to the driver side rear panel behind the wheel.
I went ape shit and said I would have to get a whole new paint job. Threatened them with some legal jargon and ended up getting it for $9k.
Raced a 335xi through the mountains in Tenn on the way back. the interior, engine and tranny are immaculate. Drives amazingly well (have to get used to it pulling to the right a bit under hard acceleration).
Two things (other than the paint):
Passenger side headlight is out, but comes on for a few seconds if I flip to brights and back to regular. Also a tickign coming from the back wall...a denso solenoid. I looked that up and think its a non issue and, from reading more, believe the HID issue is a ballast problem.
Anyone know a good paint place in chicago???

anzb,
Ran the carfax. guy had it maintained at the dealer he bought it at. every service is listed on the carfax. he works from home and has like 3 cars. hence the low miles....
can't drive worth shit though, i'm guessing, due to the scratches here and there. body can be repaired and painted though. Still has the new-car smell...
Can't figure out how to insert these damn photos...! (did a search in faq)

15g as in 15 grand.
Theres 19k miles on it. He paid $9k (or 9g).
The only place I see the $15k for is what they were asking. But w/e, its not worth the argument.
OP, welcome to the 6MT club!

Thanks, Fries, for posting the pics in a more easily-viewable format, and thanks to all for the congrats on my purchase and for welcoming me to the forum! I also really appreciate the reco on the paint shop, 08A. I will def give them a call. (if you look closely, you can see white where the paint is chipped on the front bumber and lower body work, and if you look really closely, in the angle photo from the left rear position, you can see a disoloration shaped like an amoeba on the lower-left rear panel behind the driver's side rear wheel. There are also numerous chips in the paint, even one or two on the damn roof, near the sunroof).
I ordered my ballast and TL-S chrome/leather shifter last night. Still have to get plates and call my insurance company to have her officially added to the lineup (automatically covered for 30 days).
For those of you who replaced a ballast, did you seal it in silicone??
Also, recall a small jitter under hard braking the other day...beginings of my need to replace the rotors I'm guessing. Any proven rotor and pad combos I should consider (I see Rotara slotted seems to be popular).
Thanks again guys!
Drove my '97 3.2 TL to work today and am having separation anxiety...

Holly crap! 9K for less than 20,000 miles! Unbelievable. I can't believe how clean it is. Did they buy it and just park it while keep it clean? Doesn't even look like your seats have been sat in. Great buy, and good luck with the new ride!
EDIT
You robbed that poor bastard! haha, great work!

as far as ther new ballest goes, when i got mine for my 03 TL-S (should be exact same) they were an updated part which had a seal around the igniter plug (inside plug), so no i did not seal mine, but the other side which was still good, but the old design, i did put a little rtv sealant around that plug to try and seal it up some, other than that they shoud be watertight
BTW: when mine failed it was not from water entering, it overheated, and a couple of the resisters burned/melted
as far as the brakes go i got akebono brakes pads and brembo oe replacement rotors all around and love them, previous owner had some slotted rotors and ebc pads all around and were they dusty suckers

Ok...let me clear something up. Never acted like a prick, CL6. Here is the full story...
Saw the link on craigslist and sent an email because there was no number. I thought it was a joke or fraud based on the mileage. I have been looking for 2+ years for a super clean, low-mileage 6MT, and the closest I ever came was one in Denver, silver, with 48k miles for around $14,700 (last year). after several phone convos with the dealer and numerous pics, I told the sales guy that I was a discerning buyer, an attorney, and the nicest guy unless you try to screw me. I reitterated that if there was any damage AT ALL--he better send me a close up, because if I fly out and find things I was not made aware of, I would go nuts on his ass.
he began to send pics of little things here and there and the deal fell apart.
So, after getting on the phone with the lady in ATL this time (selling it for her boss), she sent the pics that you see here and several others I did not post. We began talking on last wed or thurs and, due to work and family commitments, I could only come down Sun and would have to drive back that day for work on Monday. I pulled up kbb prices ($11.8k for private and like $13.5k for dealer retail) and began negotiating from there. I told her that, based on the pics, the car was in terrific condition and deserved a premium price, which I was willing to pay, just not $15k. I asked whether it was a non-smoking vehicle and for "pics of any damage whatsoever." She replied back that they were non-smokers and that the car had been garaged kept, bought and maintained at Ed Volls Acura, and was her boss' baby.
From the absence of any mention of damage, the photos you see posted here, and based on her representations and low mileage, I took this to mean that the car was essentially flawless. We settled on $14k and I asked whether he preferred certified or cashier's check. She said they would not accept a check on the weekend and that I could wire the money or bring cash. I chose the latter.
She picked me up from the airport at 11am and took me to dude's house. As soon as we pulled up I saw the car in the driveway and the sun was hitting just right so that I was able to see one or two small dimple dents on the driver's side (not visible in pics). I said "uh oh.." and she asked was that a good uh-oh or a bad uh-oh. I replied that I didn't know yet, as I was walking up to the car. Got to the rear of the car and noticed a nice nick in the rear bumper...then noticed the amoeba-shaped issue on the rear lower panel (bad scratches that had been painted over horribly with touch-up paint). Upon furhter inspection, I notice several noticeable rock chips (not noticeable in photos) and turned to her and said WTF?
Mind you, she had some dude friend with her and I had my 16-yr old nephew with me. I started naming off the body issues and asked why she hadn't disclosed this before I flew my ass down here. She said she must not have seen them. Then dudes son rolls out of the house (28 or so) and asks me how it looks. shitty, I tell him, because....and rattled off the various exterior issues. He tries to tell me they aren't so bad and I explain to him that my expectation was that there were going to be none...and that I specifically asked about them.
He said that it wasn't his dad's fault because he was not brokering the deal personally. At this time, the lady goes in the house and starts talking to dad, I guess. She comes back out 5 mins later and asks whether I wanted to test drive it. while she was in the house, I was on the phone with Delta inquiring about flights back to chicago and speaking loudly enough to my nephew that her dude friend could hear that I planned on bringing suit for my costs if they did not agree to pay for the flight costs.
So I agree to take a drive with the son. We head off and the car rides amazingly well, but I'm still focused on the exterior and the fact that I was mislead. I was fuming!
I like the ride and the car...a lot, but was not going to let JR know it. We get back and I get out of the car complaining about the misrepresentation and who is going to pay for our flight back. return flight for same-day flights were looking at about $800 a piece. She goes in the house again and comes out and says what about $11k. I say, I have no idea how much a paint job costs, but expect that its several thousand for one as good as oem. I bitch a little more and Jr goes in the house. then she goes in the house again and then comes back out and asks if I want to meet the seller.
I agree and go in the house. dude is laid up sick, with cancer, I think, and does not look all that great. I tell him that I am sorry to bother him but that we have an issue. He tells me that a paint job does not cost 7 or 8 grand, and I tell him that I agree. Someone apparantly told him I was saying it was going to cost 7 or 8 grand -- I was saying several grand, like 2 or 3.
he tells me that I can get a better than oem paint job for 2 grand and that I should jump at 11k. I tell him that I have no idea how much a good paintjob costs and feel like I'm negotiating against myself. I also look at my watch and see that its almost 3 o'clock. I gotta either get to the airport or get on the road back bc I have to be in Chicago for work at 8am.
I tell him that I had no intention of coming down here to buy a car that needed to be repainted and that I was mislead for all the reasons I stated earlier. I again mentioned the email the the lady says that she never got it. He backs her up, so I ask if he has wireless, which he did. I pull out my laptop, open my work email and pull up the email, which she responded to. I read it to them and her face changed.
I reminded him that I had never flown across the country to buy anything and that I was a very busy man and relied upon the representations of his agent/broker. I told him that a reasonable person (and court) would think my belief in a near-perfect car, based on all the factors, was reasonable, and that I would have good grounds to, at a min, get my flight costs. He then says, well, I know this is crazy (speaking to the lady and then turning to me), but how about $9k. I was still pissed and clearly was not thinking all that clearly, because I said, let me go outside and look at it again. I then looked at it again and came back and said I needed to drive it again. We took it to Costco to get the tires topped off with Nitrogen and filled up the tank ( on their dime). I came back and spoke to my nephew....he said the car sounds amazing and is fast as hell and that I would be crazy not to buy it for $9k. So I did, and we got on the road 15 mins later after signing the paperwork and counting the benjamins.
I realize now that I was in shock/anger mode and was not thinking clearly. he could have easily said FU, and sent me to the airport. Trying to get flight costs out of them would have been a nightmare and he could have EASILY sold it for his asking price in a few days.
I set my address in the Navi and off we went...
Looking back, it is a steal, but nothing I forced and nothing I am ashamed of. They tried to screw me and their the ones that ended up seeing my O-face. They knew that once I was down there, I would be stuck...and they knew I would probably take issue with some exterior issues, so they arranged it so I would come down with cash, which makes negotiation far easier than if I had brought a check. they underestimated me, that's all, and I always win!

Raj,
My plans are to fix the ballast and wait until the spring to address the paint issues. Not sure if I need a whole new paint job or if it can be fixed. I plan to keep her, if that's the question, and plan on reading up this winter on this site and others on all the available mods that are of interest to me to settle of which, if any, I want to perform.
Not sure about Sat. Last I checked there was a possible location move and guys were iffy about it...
