BOO HISS PhotoPoint to switch to a PAY service

I know this isn’t entirely a car related post, but considering many of us use this FREE service for pictures of out CL’s I think it should be discussed here.

I just got this letter from Photopoint today:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Dear Member,

PhotoPoint has dedicated its business to protecting your pictures and allowing you to share them easily with your family and friends. We thank you for making PhotoPoint the #1 online photography company.

To continue providing you the online photo experience you enjoy, we need to make several changes to our service in the coming weeks. Most significant is that, starting in mid-May, PhotoPoint.com will no longer be a free service, except for limited "trial" memberships.</font>
Now what am I supposed to do with the 200 plus photo’s I have there?
Not to mention all the HELM scans and FAQ links I have linked there for my install tips?

Does anyone know of another SITE that can provide this service similar to PhotoPoint?
Can anyone recommend any of those FREE Web hosting sites?

My ISP only provides 5-MEG of storage space for my homepage and that gets eaten up real fast with the High-Res digital photos that I like to post.

I'm sure WebToker will come up with something. I'm sure he'll be able to help out at least with the FAQ picture hosting. This is certainly a sad time. I dont think Yahoo lets you directly link pics either. The options are getting slim.

I'd love to help out as well, but I could never guarantee the existence of the Red Rocket web (it hosted at home, with help from domains2go), not to mention mediaone has block my ability to host an FTP site so adding pics would be a manual process on my end...unless someone has some good HTML upload code?

Shawn, your images will be missed (helm scans rule !!!!)

yeah, but who knows what people will send me.

Anyway, there are sufficient space restrictions set on the server to prevent that anyway.

I was mostly just trying to see how to do it and it looks like it will work (for other things...)

Thanks for your concern.

Well after cooling down a bit and reading the entire letter, it seems like they will have a “BASIC” membership for only 9.95 a year which will enable you to store up to ONE THOUSAND pictures on their site.
I will probably pay the first year so I don’t have to move anything.

There was no mention of SIZE limitations, but I guess that isn’t so bad considering my ISP wants 2.50 a month for each additional 1-MEG of hosting space.

Here is the entire text of the announcement if you didn't get it:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Dear Member,

PhotoPoint has dedicated its business to protecting your pictures and allowing you to share them easily with your family and friends. We thank you for making PhotoPoint the #1 online photography company.

To continue providing you the online photo experience you enjoy, we need to make several changes to our service in the coming weeks. Most significant is that, starting in mid-May, PhotoPoint.com will no longer be a free service, except for limited "trial" memberships.

We believe you deserve to get real value for your dollars. For the past six months we have conducted surveys and talked directly with members to learn what people want from an online photo company. We have built a full-service program based on value, not just storage, designed by users like you.

As a PhotoPoint Member, you will enjoy all of the current PhotoPoint features including secure photo albums and PicCheer photo postcards, plus:

Save 5% off all print orders for the year
Create and Save up to 5 SmashCast Movies - add music and graphics to your photos
Store up to 1000 photos*
Print at Home service - print photos at home like a pro
Enjoy express customer service
Receive our PhotoPointersTM Tutorial Series - valuable tips and tricks for improving your photography

For a limited time, you can join for an entire year for a one-time charge of $19.95, and we'll include 25 free prints (the prints alone are a $12 value).
As a valued member, you also have the option of a special lower priced basic membership, which does not include prints, for just $9.95 for the year. These introductory offers will end April 30, 2001.

* For members with more than 1000 photos in their PhotoPoint account, an additional $9.95 yearly fee will be charged per 1000 photos.

WAAAAAAAAAAH! You crybabies astound me. The Golden Age of the Internet is OVER! NO MORE FREE RIDES!

Seems like they've come to their senses and decided NOT to let a bazillion, gagillion CHEAP BASTARDS use the system as a place to store porn, because that's EXACTLY what photopoint has become. Of course they have to move to a pay-to-play model. They EXPECTED people to host pictures of babies and families and stupid shit like that AND have those people's friends and relatives order prints which would help off-set the cost of bandwidth and storage. Typical of any start-up dot.com, the half-wits in charge didn't put enough thought into their business plan and didn't think anyone would actually abuse the system.

Quit crying, you fucks, and get your own server. I pay $24.99 a month for 150MB and 5GB of traffic, AND I pay that just to host a couple of pictures of my new tires. And don't tell me you can't afford it, because if you're driving $30K cars and you can't afford a measley subscription to Photopoint, you've probably got much bigger concerns to worry about.

ALLRIGHT, FINE!

I'm not sorry for a word I wrote, but c'mon people. $9.95 for an ENTIRE year is a friggin' BARGAIN! And, I didn't specifically say that anyone here was a CHEAP BASTARD. I should have qualified that my commentary was directed mostly at the kind of lame-asses over at xxx-xxxxx.net who think that PhotoPoint should be a free porno warehouse.

I just get tired of people complaining about the "Free Internet". A company like PhotoPoint has got to start making money to stay in business. They're not a non-profit org, ya know. If someone suddenly decided that you should give your labor away for free, would YOU stand for it? No. Then why should we expect PhotoPoint to keep subsidizing our data exchange? Has anyone even put any thought into just how much capital is probably expended on a daily basis for bandwidth, servers, employees, electricity to run those servers, employee benefits, real estate leases, etc., etc.?

Hey guys,

If it's web space you need, I think I'll be able to help. I have a domain and tons of space. If all else fails, I will set something up so users of this forum can post pictures.

Basically you are right except for one thing: when I posted pictures there, they agreed to let me do so for free, as many as I wanted. After I posted too many, they started wanting money. That unfair unless they gave you ample time to regroup. Even a landlord gives you 60 days to pack up and move out.

I think it's stupid regardless of the price. Yes, $10 is rather minor but of all the free stuff that I have on the Internet today, if they all starting wanting [some] money, I would be in trouble. A lot of it is junk and can just simply be abandoned, but personal photos?

Somebody else with a more friendly business model will emerge. If anything, PP should have a free option, something like 100 pictures of less.

How do you know they are losing money? How do you know they are not making a profit? Have you seen the financials? Have you seen the business model that says "start charging customers and we'll be in the black by the end of the year?"

They are going to go out of business anyway....

People whine when they get something for free and all of a sudden they are getting charged and have little or no recourse." It happens all the time, this is nothing new. When you have a free Visa card you use to get Frequent Flyer Mileage for several years, then all of a sudden your Bank sends you change in terms saying "we need $20 annual fee starting next month", you whine and it's legitimate. Won't change anything but it's legitimate. Cancel the card or suck it up. But you whine.

If Photopoint is like many of the other sites, the deposits are the ones that made that site what it is today. Let them get their money from the advertisers like everybody else. I'm complaining because I hate to see this customer-paid business model begin to emerge on the Internet. It's going to ruin if not slow down the growth of the Internet. The US economy is already in trouble, why f*ck with the Internet, too?

Image if Mapquest made you pay to get maps and directions. Bye Bye Mapquest. Perhaps we should pay to get car quotes and reviews on the Internet? Acura-cl.com should charge a per post fee, eh? CLPower

Actually I don't even know why I'm complaining. I didn't get that email so they're not going to charge me anything. The dozen or so pictures I have up there....

well, i think that this photopoint think is crazy. initially i was very angry about the sudden change to a pay site but after i got the letter from photopoint i was suddenly changed a little. i mean exactly what droika said, we drive 30grand cars and if we cant pay 25 bcks for a site to hold pics of our cars and other people or things we hold dear. i would really hate to movce all my shit to another site even if it is free, becasue now photopint is in a joint venuture with wolf camara and kodak and u can now get prints of your pics from them for like 50cents a copy. its a fuckin bargain if i may say soo, and when u pay 25 for the year, u also get 25 pics free. well, i guess we will see what happens.

Here is an alternative. I know they don't allow you to use as much space, but you could open several accounts.

http://y42.photos.yahoo.com/

BTW, I don't know how you guys are using so much space on PhotoPoint!!! My aviation site has over 2000 photos on it is currently using only 356 mb of server space.

I realize that, but why do the pics you load up to the server have to be at such a high resolution? 800 by 600 (or 1024 by 768) should work fine. If you're trying to focus on one particular area, crop down to that area.
