Bnut - Jet Coated Headers

Bnut,

How much was it? Where did you send them? Is there supposed to be a performance improvement with this process?

Thanks,

Spiro

The cost is roughly $250 with shipping for the coating. There is a plant in GA and another in PA that does the coating. They claim on high HP setups (ie 500+hp) that small gains can be seen. The main benefit of the coating is protecting the headers against corrosion and rust.

Here is my advice. Do NOT get your headers coated! If you do want to get them coated, I would ONLY have the outside of the headers coated. My headers had to be coated twice because of a flaw with the coating inside the downpipe. I can't prove it, but I'm convinced that having the headers coated twice somehow "ruined" the performance of my headers. My headers gains were roughly 1/2 of the other V6 Accord members who had their's dyno'd. I had a 6hp PEAK gain with my headers. My intake and pulleys netted me larger gains than that! I even had my car re-dyno'd a second time after having the oil changed and cleaning my air filter. NO difference!

Was this dyno for the CL-S, or Accord? I winder what ignition they would use for the CL-S. MSD? I dont think Comptech has an ignition.

Bnut,

Thanks for your input. I'm definately not going to do it then. $250 just isnt worth it for me.

Stainless steel headers should not need to be Jet Coated...

I would definitely do it to uncoated mild steel headers!

(just my own opinion, from years of learning with non-stainless headers)

I always preferred Ceramic to be honest.

Sure -- just forget about mild-steel headers lasting without some kind of "coating." Been there, done that. I was welding and reinforcing mild steel headers every couple of months. I finally took up welding (that's how bad it was...)

Its a shame they dont offer ceramic for our cars. It always looks the same, It conducts heat better, and its cheaper. The only drawback is it cracks easier. Personally I did not have a problem with my headers on the integ.

Does this coating prevent the stainless from browning after time?

Sounds like good insurance on your headers.

Yup, NO browning at all... My headers still look just like this:

Call me crazy, but I don't mind the gold color of my headers.

However, for "show" cars, it does sound like doing just the outside would be best...

True. If that's the only thing that jet coating does, then to me its not worthwhile for $250. Have any of you guys tried wrapping the headers, even though comptech does not recommend it?
