Block Safe Tempature?

What is the melting tempature of our block? What would be a safe tempature to keep it under? Where would be a good place to mount a tempature sensor?

Aluminum melts at about 1600 F. Short burst of power can have the EGTs go over 1600 F in some turbo applications, not our NA cars. But with nitrous the same high temps can be acheived. In most cases though, try and keep the EGTs below 1500 F.

As for block temps, that would depend on the location measured. But you could look at the coolant temp, normally around 200 F. If your coolant starts going well north of 225 F the PCM will pitch a fit and you should start getting worried about over heating.

Im going to run NOS, so is there something I can get the temp from other than the coolant, that way there is not time delay in temp raise?

The best thing to watch is the EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature). It really is the best indication as to the combustion status at a reasonable price.

All it involve sis a TC (thermocouple, normally Type K) mounted in the exhaust manifold near the ports. Then the TC wire fed to a gauge in the car. This will display the EGTs in C or F.

During cruise most EGTs hover around 900 - 1000 F and jump to the 1400 range during WOT. They can continue to climb even further if you stay on it.

Its not a bad idea to watch this when running NOS. Of course in most cases where damage did occur to the engine due to lack of fuel the EGT probably wouldn't of reacted quick enough. But it does give an indication to the health of the system. Plus it does allow you to tune the system a bit better. At WOT; cooler EGTs indicate a richer condition than with higher temps. If you start hitting 1600 F you are too lean and time to get more fuel flowing or back off on the nitrous.

Hope this helps.

You wouldn't happen to know where I can find one? I found some thermocouplers but can't seem to find gauges to attach to them

Check out Summit Racing or Jegs:

http://www.summitracing.com

http://www.jegs.com

Both will have the probes and gauges. This will require tapping into the exhaust manifold...
