Black Box on new Honda?

Ok..here is the story.
Yesterday we recieve a letter from our dealer. sayin we had approximately 13,322miles(And we had around 13,400 on the clock) on our 2004 Honda odyssey. And our last service was at 3000miles for an oil change at two and half month ago. Since this X'mas my family drove the ody from Florida to canada(round trip) and put around 6000miles on her. My question is 1)how can a dealer know our miles are?
And there are no way they can guess we put 6000miles over on x'mas.

Does newer Honda have Black Box like on the Vett? So Honda know how many mlies u drove? So u can turn ur clock back?
Last question is how how how the heck they know? Some kinda device send those mileage back to Honda??

the computer keeps track of the mileage, are you concerned with having 6000 miles with out an oil change or what.

he's confused that the dealer knew how many miles he had on the car considering he made a 6,000 mile road trip

The dealers are basicly making an educated guess when they send out that stuff. Once they get the car in for service a couple of time and enter your mileage in their computer each time, they usually can calculate your mileage pretty accurately. Maybe they just got lucky this time. Most people drive about 12-15K miles a year. I'll bet you've had this car for just under a year

They're usually within a couple thousand miles when they send me my servive reminders.

Dude, comeon. DO you honestly think ther eis some sort of transmitter in the car that tells Honda what your engine is doing? Maybe if you have Onstar, they could do it, but I think they would have to get your consent. More than likely, they are speculating based on averages and time with car.

When did you buy the car?

yea..but how? we brought the van on oct 03. And we had the oil change at around Nov when the clock are at 3000miles. after there our van never been to dealer. We do our own oil change
Frist time was free so we just let them do it.
coz there is no way they can guess we had 3000miles on Nov and now Fed we have over 13000miles on it.

I just got a service reminder letter from my dealership too. It said I was due to come in for my 11,250 mile service. My mileage was around 11,500. Pretty good guess.

They just made a good guess, that's all.

Even if there were a "black box", it's not a transmitter. Even the GM unit doesn't transmit anything. It only records 5 seconds of information prior to an ACCIDENT. It's not a spy unit.

IF he bought it in Oct, and they base these mailers on average miles driven, how would they know he hit 13k? He should only be around ~6k based on averages.

I got a service letter from my dealer last month saying that I had reached 90,000 km and was due for a service. Because of school and the car being in the shop most of the time for stereo upgrades, I was still under 83,000 km. I didn't take my car in for service till last week...for my 84,000 km service.

Yeah, so it's just an estimate. Their guess was off by 7,000 km.

coz there is no way they can guess we had 3000miles on Nov and now Fed we have over 13000miles on it.

Do you know the mathematical term "interpolation"?

Their system iterpolates the amount of mileage you will have in a particular month based on the information they already got.

3000 in a month will make them guess 12,000 in 4 months. It will vary depending on the amount of inputs they have.

There is no way they keep track of your car via satellite or some shit like that.
