Bike racks ---Roof or Trunk mount----

Does anybody know what options are out there for our cars regarding bike racks?? I just purchased a sweet mountain bike and now I have to figure out how to transport it. I would prefer a truck mount just b/c it's cheaper. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Go to www.yakima.com and choose the "Choose my rack" option. There are 2 options for the roof mount rack that you can choose and customize.

Also, I haven't tried it but if you purchase a hide-a-hitch, I'm sure Yakima will have 5-10 different rear mount options for you.

I am seriously into Mt. Biking and they make excellent products.

If you like to ride in the mud or off-road a lot, then I would suggest the rear mount. The mud comes off while your driving and you have to wash your car everytime you use the roof mount. You also run the risk of it slipping off while loading and unloading and scratching your roof...just a few helpful suggestions. Good Luck...

definitely do the roof rack. you can do so much more like add a ski attachment and so on. i got the yakima roof rack without the stretch kit. you don't need it unless you plan on lugging a canoe around. all you need are 4 q towers, two 48" bars, 2 sets of #92 clips, and a bike rack attachment(i got the steelhead). go to yakima.com to verify the fit, but if you do plan on purchasing the rack go to 4yakima.com they are out in wisconsin so you don't have to pay sales tax and they even pay for ups ground. check it out.

I've got a trunk mount that holds two bikes.
My car was one day old and we had bikes on back going on vacation. We get to Rangeley Lake Maine and my pedal had scratched back of trunk (four nicks) which I used touchup paint on. The pedal as two inches from paint but going over a bump did it. Now I make sure pedal is below bumper on inside bike so no chance of that happening again. We like the trunk mount because it is easy to get bike off and on. I do use a rag under the foam rollers to keep foam from rubbing out my wax job.

BIG THANKS for all of the great feedback. I'm still torn by the decision. I'm supposed to pick-up my bike today so I have to come with something quick.

Thanks again fellas!

I'd get a hitch and get a hitch rack for it. The bikes stay off the car and there's no worry of scratching the roof or trunk with either the bike or the rack.
