Beat an M Roadster...

I was quite surprised this evening when I pulled up beside a BMW M Roadster convertible (the older 240 horse one) and he was good to go. So we cross the intersection both in first gear (and very careful looking for police) and I turned off my A/C and turned on the radar detector. Once we passed the intersection, we’re right beside each other and I hear his engine begin to roar as he punches it... So I hit the pedal. His nose was initially about 2-3 feet in front of mine through 1st (just cause he hit it to the floor before me), until I shifted into second. Into second and the rubber is laying… grabbed grip and started to pull on him. Didn’t get a chance to shift into 3rd because we came to traffic. So we only hit around 90kms/hr, but by that point his nose was behind my rear bumper… See ya pal.

That was my first race with my CL so I didn't really know what to expect. Knew it was quick.... but was even more impressed after the fact.
The guy seemed a bit pissed after... hehe.. then he went weaving through traffic like a hero. funny.

Cheers guys.

Ya, the M's are nice. I was unsure how quick the old one was. Don't think I'd be able to keep up with the new one!

I believe u cause I raced one and won also on a straight away, I was so surprised.

I raced another one on a curvy road, and 2 bent rims and a near death experience later, I decided I needed suspension enhancments (and keep the VSC on dummy)

I actually have a thing for the M coupe:whocares:

Even the old roadsters are quite fast, are you sure it has the \\\M logo? If I remember correctly, they are good for 14.1-14.5 in the quarter in stock form. Somehow, it sounded more like a 3.0 you raced. Anyway, nice kill.

Actually, I've seen older M Roadsters hit sub 14's, but that's besides the point. If you're a better shifter than the other guy then victory is all yours.

Sick, are you crazy racing a M Roadster on twisties with your boat? j/k

The fastest I've seen for 98-00 (S52) M Roadster is 13.3 with software upgrade. On stock form, I've seen as fast as 13.7.

With an average driver, it should be low 14 sec car.
Anyways, good kill!!!

Thanks guys.

Yup. It definitely was an M. I came from behind him to meet him on his right at the light. Flared our rear with the wider tires, M on the back, and stock "dual" exhaust.

Buddy was pissed after the math too... It was quite humorous. Probably more so because he thought he got smoked by a stock CLS. Bless those 6 gears!

He did have a passenger whereas I didn't, so I'll give him that... But still, I was happy.

If you only see "dual" exhaust pipes, for sure, you were not racing the ///M. The M roaster has quat exhaust tips which can not be mistaken for. About the flared out rear, all roadster have the same body except for a different front bumper and some little minor details. Chances are, you were racing a rebadge M roadster. The 3.0 sounds more like your discriptions.

Ya it had "dual" twin pipes ( or quat tips, whatever you want to call them). Looked exactly like a stock M Roadster. M M M.

E46 M3 (01+) and M Roadster/Coupe (01+) have S54 engine.

The rev limit on M3 is 8000 and 7600 for M Roadster/Coupe.
M3s produce 333 hp and M Roadster/Coupe produce 315 hp.
M3s usually weight at 3400 and M Roadster/Coupe weight around 3100.

It was the older 240 horse one I raced. Probably 99 or 2000 model.

How did you know it was an old model?
Only people who follow M models very closely can tell the difference between old and new since there are so little changes.

Anyways, I am sure mid to high 14sec car has every potential of beating a high 13 to low 14 sec on the street. So, it was probably your driving skill that did the job.

Why can't he know about the differences between the two models? Just because he owns an Ac doen't mean he can't be a car enthusiast. That statement made you sound stuck up. The guy obviously knows a little bit about the car in that he knew the 2001 model had the 315 hp engine and in his description of the car. There are plenty of people in here who have knowledge about all sorts of cars so try not to jump to any conclusions...I unfortunately am not one of those people but I am always willing to learn!

Noboy said he couldn't have known, he could have. Yes.
But I wanted to see how...
Because there is no apparent difference between the two. Unless you are looking at it closely, no one can tell the difference. It would be even harder if these things are moving. If he knows about BMW models that well, good for him.

Only apparent differences are
1. "m" log on the side and back. 01+ model has a bit rounder "m".
2. 01+ model has chrome surrounding on rear view mirror.
3. 01+ model has satin finished rims instead of polished aluminum rims.
These differences don't strike out easily unless you are looking it closely while it is parked. Trust me on this.

Is your name Jung by any chance? If so, I heard about your car and what RMS did...saw it at Curry's for quite some time. I hope you got everything straightened out.

Sorry, name is not Jung.
But my car was being SCed at Curry's Clash. It's the first S54 M to have a SC in the States. For that, it took a long time to make it run well (they worked on it for 2 months or so). I finally got my car back a few weeks ago. It has been running without any major problems so far. However, it is still not done since RMS is still working on the finalized version of intake for S54 Ms. Thanks for asking.

another difference i've noticed between the newer m-roadsters and the older m-roadsters are the side vents on the front fenders. The newer ones look different than the older ones if I remember correctly.

I had 2000 M Roadster (previous model with 240 hp) before I traded it in for 2001 M Roadster. I did not see any apparent difference on side gills? But the "M" symbol on the side gill is different as I've mentioned.
But I do remember someone mentioning about very discrete difference in the side gill design. I just haven't noticed...

In addition to what ///M Roadster has mentioned, another tell tale sign of the 01-02 models is the color of the car itself. Steel Gray, Laguna Seca Blue (See Sig) and Phoenix Yellow are the new M Colors only available from 01 to 02.

YEAH!!! I used to be Legend crew. I had 91 legend and 94 Type 2 Coupe. Awesome cars. I still think 93+ Legend Coupes are the best looking coupes until today.

The 94+95 Legend coupe 6 speeds with the type 2 engine is nice then the CL in my opinion, and also one of the best looking cars on the road....why the hell would you ever get rid of it!!!
