Battery in Trunk and Turbo under the Hood

I relocated the battery to the trunk today... not too painful, although I made a foolish mistake. I cut all the wires up front and after removing the battery... realized that the trunk doesn't have a key-hole... I had to use 3 1-foot extensions to reach that little emergency lever in the back THROUGH the cargo hold... what a pain!

Anyways... it came out pretty neat:

With ALL that space up front... there's a lot of room for the turbo now:

http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/gunjan_ra...c=ph%26.view=t

Of course... it will sit higher up and probably turned so that the exhaust faces the front of the car.

I hate to burst your creative bubble , but there’s an emergency trunk release just inside the seat passthrough that’s easily accessible from the back seat.

Nice work otherwise though.

Trunk Release?

I don't think there is one... like other Hondas... there isn't a yellow pull-tag to release the trunk near the pass-thru. There IS an emergency release on the latch-side... which is what I had to push... but I'll look again to be sure.

Intercooler.... Spearco is making one for me... should be ready
this week. It's a 20"x6.5"x3.5" core.

Looking good bro... definitely want to check it out when you get a chance. I even ran the thought of turbocharging the CL across the wife today... sounds like I'll have to do very well at Vegas for it to fly, but you never know

Keep us posted

Looks good, but how come you didn't put the battery on the passenger side to counterbalance the weight of the driver?

Weight

Well... I didn't want to cross the 4 guage battery wire across the center console where the Navigation and Radio is... so I ran it along the driver-side to the rear of the car. also... the passenger-side has the tool-kit and jack... while the driver-side is just an empty spot. I wanted to take as little room as possible in the trunk.

I used:

4 guage battery-wire
Factory Battery
Factory Battery-box and keep-downs
Factory Battery terminal-connectors (crimp/weld the new wire on)

I maintained the Factory GND points on the engine and front-chassis (didn't want to screw with that... I have had BAD experiences with BAD grounds in the past!) The rear GND is pretty easy.

I am going to look for the 2nd trunk release now

Battery Weight

Yeah... the stock battery is HEAVY! I might switch later on to a lighter one.

You just have to connect the negative (-) terminal to the chassis. I didn't even drill... used those screws from the little knobs which the cargo net holds onto!

Just make sure the ENGINE is grounded properly to the chassis up front!!!!! I can't stress that enough!

yea and also do yourself a favor and setup a fuse sorta like the BMW so just in case of accident the battery disconnects. You are sitting a possible spark on top of a gas tank I don't think I need to explain any further.. KABOOM!!!!!! (CL HEAVEN)

Fuse

Yup... one of those inline fuses used with audio-systems might do. The only risk is if the positive (+) terminal somehow gets in
contact with the chassis (unlikely, but you never know!).

By the way... I search hard and there IS NO OTHER TRUNK OPENER NEAR THE PASS-THRU!!! The only emergency trunk opener is just near the latch (its a little button you push to the left). Maybe they changed it from 2001 to 2003

I know that I have one. If I recall, there is a diagram in the manual. It's a cheap plastic handle that's a little tucked away.

Honestly, I don't think a fuse is going to do anything to prevent an initial spark. You have to have a pretty heavy fuse there to allow the car to crank. That same fuse is going to allow a rather large spark in the event of a short, so best you can do is pray it's not around gas. Having said that, definitely install a fuse there to prevent a sustained short.

Allmotor, if you do want to install the battery on the passenger side, you can easily run 4 guage wire under the carpet and down the middle of the car w/o crossing the center console. You don't even have to take out the carpet. If you want to do it, I'd be happy to come over and help out as it only took me about 45 minutes to run wire for my amp. Basically, the wire comes in through the hole in the firewall, drops under the carpet wrapped around the console, and you feed it through the holes in the carpet where the driver's seat is. After snaking it through, you pull it tight and it lines up perfectly down the middle of the car.

got any pics I think I know what you mean but want to know if we're on the same page. As far as the fuse I understand it won't do anything for the initial spark but notice how I said a fuse like the BMW. Since the BMW has the battery in the trunk they installed an apparatus that disconnects the battery and puts on the hazard lights in case of an accident.

Wire

Thanks for the offer!

I don't really want to take it out and re-run the wire anytime soon though... one of the problems with having it on the right side is that it can't sit all the way to the right because the jack and the little tools are there. I don't want to remove those things... so I just removed the plastic piece on the left-side and it sits flush.

I don't know how much the battery is going to offset any weight balance. I assume the engine is already biased a bit towards the passenger-side (tranny vs. long-block). The driver probably evens things out and adds some. I don't know... I don't even have springs... so my handling is sub-par already!

There are bigger hurdles to overcome with the exhaust manifold!

Yea if you can't find the latch for the trunk I sincerly hope you are getting somebody else to install the blower on your car I don't think your ready for such a task

I unfortunately don't own a digital camera and so didn't have one available while I was wiring the car. However, Silver Knight has a pic that might help...

http://silverknight.clickhere2.net/sound.html

The first pic shows the hole through the firewall. Instead of turning to the left (as in his pic), you can pull the carpet back a bit where it goes up and around the [back] side of the console and drop the wire through.

Just to clarify, I actually started snaking the wire from the trunk first. First you take out the front driver's side seat and rear seat. Then I took a clothes hanger and ran it under the carpet (from the rear seat) until it poked through to the front seat's rear bolt is. Ran another hanger from the rear bolt to the front bolt holes in the carpet. Finally, I ran another hanger from the front bolt hole to the firewall (as described above)--this one is a little more difficult but you there's actually quite a bit of slack in the carpet if you pull it back (you can almost reach your entire arm under the carpet and along the console to where the seat bolts in).

Once the clothes hangers were in place, I just hooked the wire to a hanger (starting from the rear) and pulled it through to the next position. Once the wire was fed through, I pulled the slack through. Repeat until it's all the way to the front of the car and pull all of the slack out. The wire actually rides down the side of the center console, down the floor between the front seat mount and the console, and then under the rear seat console and into the trunk. You cannot tell there's a 4 gu. wire under there. Hope that helps.
