Ban HID headlights ?

There was a big article in USA today about folks lobbying the NHTSA to ban new and require retrofit of HID headlights.

Public is complaining about the "glare".

Short version, USA Today article:

here's an expert's response:

Don't forget, people complained about halogens when they came out too.

By the time thses numbuts compainers that drive SUV's that guzzle too much gas with halogens that are mounted too high anyways, get anything passed all cars will have HID's as standard.

Second, as much influence as these ppl think they have, pple who have more money to buy cars, namely US and the car manufacturers that we support have deeper pockets to employ more lobbyists....

That would make the complainers happier.. It's not as bright... Color temp does not equal brightness. The color temp governs the actual appearance of the lights, but the 6K bulbs have a 10-15% lower lumen rating which drives the actual brightness

Yes and no! Color temp govers the color of the light source. The 6k do not have 10-15% lower lumen rating. Lumen is the rating for lumenous flex, Candela is the rating for lumenous intensity. Brightness depends on two thing 1) How much power is supplied (35 watt) 2) How efficent the ballast are (about 90%). Since we are using the same ballast and keeping the 35 watt power supply constant but changing the bulb from 4200k to 6000k the brightness is the same. It might seem to be less bright due to the color change, from bluesh white to purplesh white.

Very true. there's also the real-world test and from what I have compared with a member of this board who has these, they look good, but they just don't light up the road as well. To me, it's much more important for what I see behind my wheel than it is for someone else to see what's coming at them.

not all HIDs.....

The HIDs on lexuses, infinitis, merc and our cars arent that bad... but the ones on BMW and some audis are wayyyyyyyy too bright. Its not necessarily cos they have projection style but it seems like they're pointing STRAIGHT AHEAD, instead of down on the road.

Just the other day i was TOTALLY blinded by this ass in a bmw X5 on a winding street in my neighborhood....unless he has HID for his highbeams, his regular lights almost made me rear end this truck parked on the side

Of course they wont ban all HIDs or ANY really but they can mandate on how (unnecessarily) bright the some HIDs are and where the light is being projected (whether its on the road or mostly on the upcoming traffic)

Of course those imps on this board who get the 6k just cos they're brighter, make u (and ur car) stand out at nights while NOT necessarily making the path any more visible wont agree with me but... :sqnteek:
