Autovation.net CL Type S Aluminum Pedal Covers

The prototype CL Type S Matte Finish Aluminum Pedal covers for the M/T arrived today. They look really good. Check out http://www.autovation.net for ordering information. I think that JakeCL has organized a group buy with discounts.

First Look -- The pedal covers look well made. You can see the router marks in some places, but it's not a big deal. It looks like other pedals they show on their site. They included the proper bolts, nuts, and screws. The nuts had nylon locking inserts to give a permanence to the mounting (good!).

Installation -- a bit of a bitch, not that it was hard at all, but it's a pain in the ass to work near the floor of the car. Getting the proper angle to drill the top bolts on the brake and clutch pedal were especially tough. I didn't have to support the pedals with anything (like a block of wood). The metal of the pedal was not especially hard to penetrate, even with my el-cheapo Skil corded drill and decent quality 1/8" and 3/16" bits.

They recommend gluing the covers and then drilling. Not easy with the glue I had around the house. Instead I placed the cover over the pedal and drilled the first hole, mounted the bolt to hold the pedal in position and then drilled & mounted the other bolts.

Driving -- These must add at least 10 HP . I like them. Heel-toeing is a bit easier because my foot slides off the accelerator pedal now. The size of the pedal is not really changed, and the distance between the accelerator and the brake is not very much changed (there is still a decent gap).

The grip on the brake and clutch covers is a bit too good -- the milling of the ridges and the Type S logo is a bit sharp on the edges which really grabs my sneakers. I'm sure that over time I'll wear things down and round the edges a little. I think it'd be pretty uncomfortable to drive barefoot with these -- good thing I never drive barefoot.

Pushing down on a piece of metal is a bit more 'industrial' and more bare-bones sporty then the rubber which did provide a bit of cushion. I like it, but I can see why Acura chose (if there was actually any thought or choosing done!) to keep the rubber covers: they do provide mild cushioning which adds to a more cushy drive.

Once again, my digital camera is a first generation POS. I'll probably get a new one later this year. I apologize for less then great quality.

Here's what came in the box.

Screws, nuts, & bolts. The bolts countersink into the cover and are tightened with an allen wrench. The screws are self tapping and are phillips head and countersink too.

An angled shot to show that Autovation made them with the correct curve.

Installed.
A couple bolts & screws look off center or loose because I had not cinched them all down at this point. The flash bleaches things out, but it was dark by then so sorry.

Another angle.

I'll drive with them a day or two before I re-tighten the bolts and Loctite them down.

to the Autovation guys for customizing a nice product for us.

Ask them and see what they say! Jeff and Tony have customized this product for us -- see if they'll 'improve' it for you. Their contact info is on their site.

My guess is that even with some sort of coating, any paint or coloring will quickly rub off with daily use. Think how many times you must stamp on your pedals in stop-and-go traffic. It must be 100s of times per day and 10,000s to 100,000s of times over the life of the car.

Looks nice, but is it just me or is there only an indent around the s on one of the pedals. Seems the other one doesnt have this. I also noticed those circles in the dead pedal. What are those indentations or what?

You're right. I didn't even notice that. It could also be why the flash bounces off that pedal more in the installed picture.

I'll ask them about it and see what they want to do. The pic that they sent to me has the indent that you refer to on both brake and clutch.

The circles are marks from the router. If you look at their site you'll notice that most of their pedals have some router marks. It's not really noticible in person.

AutoVation Group Buy Online Ordering

Hi guys,

John will have the online group buy ordering page set up on Thursday.

Here is the pricing:

Normal price: $75 polished / $99 beaded
Group buy price: $59 polished / $75 beaded (shipping included)

We are beginning the first batch of production (20 sets of pedals) on Friday and expect to have them completed in about 10-12 business days. We are also continuing to develop the auto set and should have those ready shortly.

Slimey,
We will have a corrected brake/clutch pedal sent out to you shortly to match what you have. Also, i think these add 15hp (not 10hp) . Thanks for being the "guinea pig" and helping us with the prototypes!

Thank you,

Anthony Hensley

Group

Online ordering is now available for the group buy. We are going to center the design on the pedals also (and replace Slimey's set with the design shifted more to the center).

You can now order online for the group buy here:

http://www.autovation.net/groupbuy/Acura/CL/body.html

I should have an update on the auto pedals next week. If you are interested in testing out the prototype set for us, please send me an e-mail.

Thank you,

Anthony Hensley

Just thought I should pipe in again for Autovation

As Mr. Hensley said, they're replacing my 'different' clutch pedal cover and then when they are ready, will send me a new clutch and brake pedal cover with the new centered logo (maybe a week).

Good product and good service!

click on the autovation link and you can see links to pics of both sets to see the difference yourself, it took about 2 weeks or so for the manuals to get done from first contact so i guess the autos should be around the same time

The auto pedals should be available within 7 days
I have also added this option onto the group buy so you can pre-order if you'd like (noting the additional delay of course).
