Is there a way to keep the transmition from automatically shifting from first to second in the manumatic mode? I think when the transmition shifts prematurely it is so

You can always trade it for a 6 speed and have control of the 1-2 shift and even an extra gear.

Why did Acura do this?
In the TSX and RSX it's up to the driver to make the 1->2 shift. Dunno about the new TL though...

Just remember that the shifting algorithms are centered around fuel efficiency and emissions. However, the harder you press the gas the longer you stay in first (higher rpm) before shifting to second.

Want to wear out this weak box quickly?

Yep...

And, I don't know how the tranny would hold up with the 1 - 2 - 1 being available in SS mode. The shift transitions and downshifts already help wear-out the gearbox. It sure isn't very robust. IMO, plan on a short life for the gearbox that does constant 1 - 2 & 2 - 1 shifts at higher RPMS – and especially when used for engine braking in the hills. Even the normal city 4-2 and 5-2 downshifts are reported by Acura’s NHTSA documents to create a lot of internal heating in the gearbox -- and this is part of the "normal" shift strategy used around town during “kick-downs.”

As mentioned, you can hold the car in 2nd with "2" using gate shift; people can use this to climb up slippery slopes to hold down the torque that they would normally get in 1st.

1 will hold the car in 1st. So, if you really need it, it's there.

The 99 TL does not have the auto 1-2 shift. It's a great feature turning onto an onramp.

yea, I just wish it did not shift out so early. My sister's RSX does not do it and it is alot more enjoyable. Not that I really keep the car in the lower gears, but it would make the run from the stop lights a whole lot more enjoyable.
