Auto Or Manual??

Hello CL'ers

I currently own a 2005 tsx 6mt, love the car so much...

but I've thinking about "downgrading" to a 2001-2003 CL-S (more like an upgrade haha)

the 6mt is really rare, so it'd be a lot better if I just went with the automatic

but my question is, is the 6mt really that much better?? I wanna hear both sides of the story...and to me, I love the manual gearbox, but I figure, since it has plenty of torque, there's really no need for constant downshifts...

well, for the TSX, the 6mt simply outperforms the 5at, is that the case for the CL also??

and is there major lag for the sports-shift??

thanks for your inputs

GOD BLESS

Kevin

In my case, I dont see much of an issue. People will tell you over and over that the auto trans are prone to failure. The 6mt's are decent amount quicker from my experience, but I have no problem with my auto. Don't get me wrong though, tiptronic downshifting for turns as I find myself doing often gets annoying and theres nothing like a 6spd. Although dont forget, the 6mt's only came in the 03 cls's

Don't buy an Auto

Its not hard anymore to find a 6spd, since many of the original owners and starting to trade them in. The 6spd does put down nicer numbers than the auto and seems to respond better to mods.

There are little or no problems for the manual but the auto has been plagued with problems.

Oh and last thing...SEARCH!!!

Moving to the main CL forum.........

The auto's can die at any time. What's worse is wondering if or when it will die. If your looking for a CLS try to find a 6MT.

I bought an 01 (auto) and have not had any problems.

However, if you can afford an 03 6mt, I would try as hard as I could to find one. In fact I would not buy a CL unless it was a manual if I were to do it again - less constant worrying and more fun FTW.

^ Exactly. I got rid of my auto because I just couldn't take worrying all the time whether it was going to die today, tomorrow or maybe never. It's totally worth waiting for a 6 speed to pop up. Plus they're not THAT rare.

We've got a forum dedicated to the auto transmission problems... What do you think that says about the auto transmissions

I Own A Six Speed And If Your Intentions Are To Mod It Up You Definetly Want To Go 6 Speed.

I agree, if you can afford it, definitely pick up a 6 speed over an auto. It's more reliable, faster, and definitely more fun to drive. Depending on your location, it really shouldn't be THAT hard to find one fairly close either.

There is a lag in every sport shift, except maybe Formula 1 .

If you enjoy driving a manual, then there is no other way to go.

Get the 6spd!!!

I have the autotragic transmission on an 03, and just came home with my 2nd transmission today at 58k miles.

I'm currently looking for a white/anthracite 6 Spd with a black interior.

I may be a lazy driver and the perfect candidate for an automatic but I don't want to worry about my transmission failing on me after July of 09.

There are more 6-speeds out there then people make it out to be. When I looked to buy mine (I wouldn't even consider the auto because of all of the transmission issues), I found 2 for sale in the Minneapolis area. One was a white one with gold badges and the one I went with was a low mileage one that had just been brought up from Texas (this is it's first time seeing snow). I love the 6-speed and wouldn't have it any other way.

If anything I would get the manual for the fact that it puts more power to the road. That, and like everyone has said, the auto in the CL is horrible.

thanks guys!! 6mt is the way to go then!

they are pretty rare though, test drove one today 144,000 miles, runs strong though, and only had one owner who commuted for around 25,000 per year, and for 10k!! I'll be looking into a few other ones around 15k

but I've considered getting the one with the 144kmiles and just take out an extra 3000 as part of my loan, and just leave that in the bank for emergency (i.e. engine swap/ vital parts of the engine replacement or upgrade)

what do you guys think?
think an ACURA will last me a while?

or do you think spending a little more on something with 70k/80k miles is a better bet?

thanks

God bless

KEvin

I would go with the lower mileage vehicle, just my opinion though.

as impossible as this sounds...

since it's SO MUCH EASIER to find an automatic at the right price and mileage, how much is the 6spd transmission conversion??

is it possible? would it be a good investment

if it's no more than 25k, I may consider

thanks

this is going back a few years-looking at volvo's-they had two we were interested in-same color-one with MT the other automatic. we hesitated on the purchase-the MT one was sold so we decided to get the automatic. Never again.

The mileage isn't nearly as important as how it was driven and taken care of.

dude, get a six speed. i hate my automatic. its laggy and not as powerful as a 6sp. plus you'll find yourself never really driving without using the sportshift, which isnt the greatest either. get an '03 white or red type-s with black interior and it will be all good...gl
oh, btw, mine is a 2003 type-s and i havent had any issues with my 5at breaking down, i just don't like the performance of it

you can find PLENTY of autos w/o a problem if you look carefully, but since youc learly have a choice, GET THE 6SP!!! many of us didnt have the choice like you do at the current times, damn i didnt even have the choice of a Type-S...basically your inquiry, isnt a question at all as you can see where 85% say 6Sp. dont ask these questions on here...go with what you'll be more comfortable with...

but since we're soooo pushy: 6SP FTMFW!!!

Why didn't you have a choice for a Type S?

Maybe it's like down here where every type-S has near 100k miles on em and type-p's have 40k and you're paying the same price for both....

something like that...i needed a car fairly quickly and in my search, no good deals on any Type-S's, six speed were just out of my range [even the Type-S's extra 1000 or w/e was pushing it], and so i bought the CL-P with 42,000 miles from an old lady! that hows you buy...[btw, a lot of limitations besides this b/c it was my 1st car, and yes i paid for it on my own...]
