Could you be so kind as to guide me in the proper direction for firewall protection? I asked this before and can't find the archive. I know there is a software program that detects and you have to go to hardware to protect. Am I right or wrong? I just got DSL and won't leave it on until I have protection. Thanks for your time. You can answer and move/delete.

GTO,

I have Norton Internet security which works pretty well. The ISP guys hate it cause they can't see me behind the software.

You can also get a hardware box from Watchguard, Sonic Systems or Linksys but this is more expensive.

Then there is some freeware from BlackIce (?) or something like that but IMO you get what you pay for.

There area few few different free firewalls on www.download.com The one Norton makes seems to be the most popular. Be careful cause sometimes they screw up your dsl. Hope that helps.

Here are the two best sites for firewall security. The first is Gibson Research. Find out how worthless Norton is and other intersting little factoids to save your bacon.

There are also some neat programs to probe your own security to figure out where the holes are and how to patch them.

http://grc.com/default.htm

The other best site is Zone Labs' Zone Alarm page. Their FREE software is better than most other inexpensive and expensive software. The paid for version is about the best you can buy - and it's cheap.

http://www.zonelabs.com/

Both sites have some really good links for finding out about hardware and software security solutions that are worthwhile, practical and affordable.

It's amazing what you can get for free.

It's even more amazing what the limitations are of the most common and trusted software products people pay good money for.

Being in the IT business, I like hardware based security. Check out the Linksys BEFSR11 (1 port), BEFSR41 (4 port), or BEFSR81 (8 port). These are $100-200 hardware devices ( e.g. at outpost.com or CompUSA ) that isolate your machine from the internet via Network Address Translation and Port Filtering. Highly recommended. ( linksys.com ) Additionally, if you want to put more than one computer on the connection, you can use the built in ports and DHCP server to do so.

Also check out linksys.com "Press Room". There are many reviews on software and hardware firewall technology that includes their product.

(No I don't work for Linksys. I'm just a user of their product who has been saved a lot of grief.)

Hardware wise, I agree with those who mentioned the Linksys.

I use Zonelabs'Zone Alarm on the software side. What sold me on Zone Alarm, above all others, is that it monitors YOUR system for authorized connections out. (i.e. realplay.exe is trying to access the internet on port -----, do you want to continue). No more adware or spyware making connectinos behind my back. You'd be amazed at how many of these things try to make a connection.

If you know a little about computers then get checkpoint. If you just want something for your house get ZoneAlarm. Zonealarm is pretty cheap and easy to use.
