Aspect Ratio Q

Greetings-

I just purchased a 2001 CL-p for the low, low price of 15K. It has 45,000 miles and other than the airbag lamp flickering when the right front seat is occupied - no problems.

Its previous owner purchased CL-S 17" OEM rims. He also installed a CL-S spoiler. The car is defiantly a poser right now - BUT once I learn the in and outs, I am confident we can improve matters where it counts. He got the SHOW part down - now we need the “GO” Looking for suggestions for bolt ons to bring the car up to “S” expectations .

The Michelin Pilots are beat. The right rear has a small bubble in its sidewall. So, first things first- I have Tire Rack shipping me Kumho Ecsta Supras. A great low dollar sticky tire.

The question is - does the fact that this car went out the door wearing 16" rubber now mean I have a recalibration due to accommodate the Kumho’s 17" hoops? The Kumhos aspect ratio is 45 rather than the stocker 50 ( 215/50-17 Michelins v. 215/45-17 Kumho)

My 95 Impala SS required reflashing its PCM to accommodate mods. Is there a preferred aftermarket system? What everyone doing to tune in their bolt ons?

Tire Size Calculator
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
tire rack hosed you. The correct over size is 215-50-17 exactly what is on the type S. With that size the speedo wil be dead on. With a 215-45-17 is will be off by about 3MPH. I'm shocked tire rack let you do this. The usaually will not sell you tires that don't spec for the car. If they didn't ship yet, they may call you back saying this.
In any event there is no way to reprogram the car's ECU. It is not flashable.

225/45-17 preferred by many here.

for improved handling , install lowering springs and struts, and upgraded anti-sway bars. upgraded brake packages. for improved power , the sky is the limit. intake, headers, exhaust, pulleys, unichip piggy-back ecu chip, supercharging, nitrous injection, etc, etc.
there are extensive threads on this site on any/all of these subjects. just click on search (at top of the page), type in your quiry and mutiple threads on each subject will appear. pm individuals for additional info. good luck, great ride!

Re: Tire Rack selling an unspecified size tire. They DID hedge at first. The salesman ( I called their 800 number) warned me Kuhomo did not make an exact replacement tire. I then asked what is the closest we can get - and the 45 aspect ratio was their response. 16 digits later they were being shipped from their warehouse. They did not deny the sale. I can live with a minor speedo error. I was just wondering if it would cause a conflict with shift points, A.B.S., or any suspension components. Right this moment it sounds like a little stiffer ride and a tad less rim protection in pothole dance episodes is the worst anticipated problem. I have the 16" original rims and plan on mounting some type of snow tire - probably Blizzacks, for Winter Duty. I suspect the speedo is already way off as the car shipped with 16" and was purchased wearing 17's! Perhaps the lower aspect ratio will be “less worse” than a full 50 series 17 - !

Thanks for the reply. Nice to know that others out there are running the size I have coming. The Impala SS is supported by an active internet element, and I benefitted many times from info gleaned from the collective wisdom of 900 other SS nuts. Looks like the CL has the same benefit right here. That is a good feeling.
