Anything wrong with going to jiffy lube?

I have always gone to the dealer for an oil change, but it always take like an hour and is always such a hassle. Is there anything wrong with going to Jiffy Lube which takes like 5 seconds? They use penzoil 5W-30 and i've been using Castrol 5W-30 at the dealership.

Thing with J lube is, they are cheap and quick. But realize it's a bunch of 16 yearolds working there, and all those years I took my cars there, I look back going wtf was I doing. I would go to the dealer or somewhere else. I take mine to Acura, or to my friend, whos dad owns a shop.

I've been using them for years. I take my own oil (Mobil 1 and Purolator Pure One) but other wise the service is the same.

I do make a point of watching while they do the service to be sure they check everything and everything gets put back properly. Never a problem.

Been going there for years, never had a problem, except for the occasional "you need this and this and this..." speech

I had them change my oil in my '89 beater Civic a couple years ago when it was dead of winter with 20 degree temps and they put almost a quart too much in.

I should have checked it on the spot but didn't do it until I got home and had a mess trying to drain out that excess oil. Should have just did it myself. I ended up on my back in the snow in my driveway after all.

They don't stock the Honda crush washer you must replace every time you remove the drain plug from the oil pan. Instead they just overtighten the drain plug. Eventually you'll strip the drain plug and it will either become stuck or it will begin to leak.

I had the monkeys down the street do my 30K and 37.5K changes, but I've got some warranty work that needs to be down before my CLS hits 50K, so I'll have the dealer do the 45K oil change...

Best D-Line in the NFL my Butt. Kerney, Coleman, and Abraham are miles ahead of your kittycats! lol. Go FALCONS!!!!!!!

Nothing is wrong with going to an independent shop for an oil change. I never pay the dealer 20 something dllars for something so simple.

But really, The FALCONS D-Line is better than Stroud and Henderson, which are pretty dirty football players to say the least.

i don't go to places like that just because all the employees are 16 year old kids that don't care about your car.

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever........... Take your car there. I took my old Suby to one a few years ago against my better judgment. Sure enough, they didn't tighten the drain plug enough and/or replace the crush washer and it leaked on my garage floor.

BTW, my parents have had many bad experiences with those places as well. None of us go anywhere but the dealerships now.

I am actually about to take my car in for an oil change wednesday or thursday. Not that I always "trust" the dealer, but at least I have somewhere to go if the car screws up instead of jiffy saying "that wasn't our fault" and such. The dealer doesn't charge very much either. Yes exactly, even if there is a nice car people don't seem to care if it isn't theirs. The dealership even left grease on the seats when my TL had it's first oil change, you can beat I didn't leave without that cleaned up! It's like wow these people take care of cars as their occupation, and they can't even completely perform the primary function of their employment! Anyways, going to the dealer would be the most logical, but always be careful.

Actually the oil change place at Sears isn't bad. Not all jiffy lube places suck.
I never go to a dealer for oil changes. They won't use mobil 1. I have a few shops I know people in that do my oil changes.

I avoid chain shops for one reason. The crap they try to sell you. I can't stand getting berated by some shop monkey on how I need a new air filer & wiper blades, or I need an injector flush at 25K miles. I can't stand that crap!

Where can you get the crush washer without getting a dealer oil change?

i do my own oil changes. i don't trust many people with my car. i worked at an acura dealership for a year and a half. out of the 20 techs there, i'd trust 2/3 of them to do minor stuff, and about 1/5 of them to do major stuff.

if you buy an oem oil filter from the parts counter at a dealership, they should give you a washer with the filter. if not, ask for one. you know they have 'em.

Well, this is how I look at it. Jiffy Lube etal use kids that are not mechanics. Dealers use mechanics to change oil. Which one would you rather do the work?

Um, you don't really believe that the dealer uses Techs to do oil changes, do you? A qualified Tech would starve to death doing oil changes & lubes - they work on flat rate and need to "beat the book" by 50% to make any real money. The dealers usually have a less qualified apprentice Tech do the oil changes - especially if that's all you bring it in for.

the rule of thumb is to stay away from any big frenchizes like PepBoys, Jiffy Lube and etc.
Your best bet is to take it to a small privately owned garage where the owner is not a shareholder, but actually works there. Get to know the owner such that he recognizes you when you come in. He will work hard not to lose your business, where as in PepBoys or Jiffy Lube nobody really gives a sH*t including the manager....

i think the k&n filter is a waste of money. it cost like 3 times as much as a fram or purolator filter and does the same thing.

i think they charge to much, because it dose not matter if your car is a v6 or in line 4 it still takes the same amount of oil well thats what i was told at the place that charges me 16 bucks with tax. every time i go to jiffy lube they always tell me i need to get this done and that done, and when i 1st took my car there the guy asked me what kind of car is this ? and i told him its a CL, and he sayed oh u mean TL ? and i told him no but in the computer he still put TL but other than that every thing was ok

The filtration system in a K&N is a better system than your standard filters. You do have to replace K&N oil filters, but not the air filters. I switched to K&N on my last car and stopped having mechanical problems. The problems I had with previous cars and standard filters. OK--so i will pay 12bux for the K&N, but the peace of mind is priceless. Until I am proven wrong...I will stick with what works for me.

Jiffy Lube f-ed up on of my rides way back and I wont even go there to take a leak...they might recycle it and try to put in the next guy's car....DYI is much better, not as good as a dealer...something blows up you have someone to point a finger at---but DYI means you care about your car enough to take them time to do the work.

I have been to jiffy lube many times and never had a problem and the location I go to they don't have teenagers working there so maybe thats why I never had problems. On the flip side I have taken my car to the dealer many times and I have had problems but on things other than oil changes.

You guys are priceless. Trust the $5/hr highschool dropout with the second largest investment you are likely to make in your life, or actually spend 20 mins under your car and make sure its done right.

Seems kind of dumb, doesnt it?

I NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVAR will go to the dealer, any jiffy lube, or any nasty shop for something I can do myself. I always come back dissapointed when I go in for warranty work, so I can only imagine the fucktards they put on regular maintenance jobs.

If you have to go, ask that only a supervisor start and drive your car. Tell him no revving the engine after the start-up and you expect the drain plug torqued to spec, no more, no less. The filter should also only be hand tight snugly. If they dont say "yes sir", leave.

JiffyLube has 5W-20, as do most places these days. But it makes no difference because 5W-30 was the recomended oil until 03. The recomendation was changed to help meet the federally mandated fuel mileage standards - nothing changed in the motor. Several other mfgs. did the same thing.

Joe5.0 - I agree 100% about changing the oil and oil filter yourself. It couldn't be easier on our cars and you know it is done correctly. The Acura parts counter employee in Omaha gave me about ten crush washers for free!
