Anyone race a new celica GTS?
I heard these are decently fast... with a manually of course... can the CLS beat it? My ex girl swears she can beat a CLS. I read it can do 0-60 in about 6.5 seconds....

Can't tell you about the dragstrip, but the GT-S is hangin' pretty well with the Type R, which is the terror of G-stock class in AutoX, and also hailed as impeccable handler on a road course.

I drove a regular GT once. It gets moving pretty well but it had problems picking up traction on take off. With the extra 20hp that the GTS gets, I imagine it can haul ass. I doubt it would beat a CLS though.

A well driven GTS should be close through first gear and part of second, but after that a CLS should pull away to a 3-5 car length victory in the quarter.
Interestingly, the CLS and the ITR trap about the same mph in the 1/4 (95-97 mph), but the ITR gets a beter launch and thus is quicker (and tends to be noticeably quicker than the Celica, see Motor Trend comparison, although it seems the Celica folks are getting a handle on the car now).

Yep... I've raced one. Once from a roll, two times from a light. The CL-S is most definitely the quicker car, but not by much. When I raced the guy from a 20mph roll, I let him get the jump (got cocky), we let off at about 80mph and he was maybe 1-2 feet ahead of me. From a stoplight, he launched very well, but I still killed him on the launch and took him by about 3 cars. The only way you'd lose to one is if you aren't paying attention!! If you let one get a big jump on you, you won't catch 'em til you're at about 100mph. They are quick lil cars.
Oh yeah... this was when I was bone stock.

My bf has a GTS and he's driven my car. He said that overall, the pickup is better on our cars but the handling is better on his....I guess it's time for me to get sways and springs.

Do a search for my name and the word celica gts. GTS stands for Gosh To Slow.
No chance w/ a Type S. I smoked a gts w/ an intake w/ my stock type S for like 6 miles on like 3 or 4 runs. no chance at ALL!

235/40/17's or 225/45/17's once I found out which one works for me.
gtech 0-60 6.03 w/ 438 pound load. preheader.

I had a '98 ITR, and I race a GTS. He was in front of me and took off. I caught up to him (at about 90 mph) and passed him. There was a hard left turn and he jammed on his brakes. I just went around the turn like it was nothing at 110. I don't know where the hell he went, I think that maybe he crashed. I went back to look and didn't see anything. Anyway, being that the Type S is just as fast as the Type R, I think it should definately beat it.

I used to have the GTS...the CL-S is much faster and much more refined than the Celica..I wrote the Celica off because the rear end was too twitchy...

I was chasing my buddy who was driving my VR6 VW and we were on a 2 lane curvy road...a lady in a minivan cut the corner about 24" into my lane..I moved over as close to the curb as possible, but it wasn't enough...I tapped the brakes and turned the wheel, and lost the back end...spun out 3 times accross all four lanes then 2 cars hit me....what a mess...end result one cheque from insurace for $43,000

i raced my friend who has the new celica gt-s. 2 times from a rolling start and 2 times from a dead stop. took him out all four times, but it's very even from 0-60 since his 2nd gear tops out at around there. from 60+, i started to pull away. dont get me wrong though...i personally feel, that we dont destroy these cars. they're pretty fast, and if we were to challenge on some twisties, the gt-s would kick our ass. after, we tried a few mild twisties, since i just installed the comptech springs. he just took off and i couldnt keep up. our car just isn't agile enuff. looking for a rematch if i get sways and lighter/better rims. maybe then the cl-s will put up a decent fight...

I sure you can mod the cl to the point where it might be able to come close to the GTS in handling. They are entirely different cars and the weight difference alone is about a 1000 pounds.

i agree with mickey, the biggest and most important difference is the weight and for those of u fellow CL-S's with navigation, u guys r at even more of a disadvantage, but we make up for it in the difference in hp and torque *i think*...my cousin has a GTS manual and i personally thought that her launch was much slower than the CL-S'S even she admitted that, but it gets even between second and third but we rape them at fourth and fifth...anyhow, we're FASTER. Now, the TRD ceia, is a whole nother st....

Dunno guys, I have driven both and I know for a fact that 0-60 and 1/4 mile is almost identical on well driven cars. There are lots of GT-S owners running 14.5-6 range with intake and exhaust. So I'd say this 3-4 car length thing is bs if the drivers were equal.

The GTS (180hp) has 40 more hp than the GT (140hp).
