Anyone done a gas shock trunk conversion?
Anyone done a gas shock trunk conversion?
I've seen it done on the TSX, but not a CL. Has anyone succesfully pulled it off? I need a little more room under the package tray for my system, and the torsion springs are just getting in my way.
that sounds like a good idea...... My torsion bars broke at the cheap welds where it mouts to the top rear deck. I could use some shocks back there. My stupid trunk won't stay open. Dynamat is way to heavy!!!!!
Yeah, I just noticed mine did to. I don't know why they put those damn torsion bars in there. I really wanted to vent my cabinet through the factory rear speaker cut out in the package tray, but these bars are getting my way.

Mine broke too but it was under warranty. I took it in and they had a body shop fix it. It only took two or three times back and forth to Acura's shitty service dept. for them to get it right.
yup, i drilled out the holes in the bracket and threw in some self tapping screws with lock washers to hold it in place, that bad boy is in there good now.
but back on topic, it would be interesting to do gas shocks, i would like that and could foresee removing all those tension bars for some loss of weight in the trunk and increase space.

Not that I have seen. The problem is in the design of the trunk opening. There isn't room to add them around the opening with the truck still closing. You would have to fab some brackets that bolt under the rear deck then a bracket that mounts to the trunk lid. Then mount the gas shocks to these brackets.
It really shouldn't be hard to do if you can make a bracket.

I'm bumping this in hopes that someone's done this for our cars. There's a great DIY on the TSX side here https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-tsx-2004-2008-124/gas-springs-replacement-tsx-trunk-write-up-finally-finished-310278/Sola
Seems like it would be the same for our cars but every trunk is different.
Topher's CL

Solaris' TSX

He used 2x80lb rated shocks. Our CL trunks w/o spoiler is 25 lbs, not sure if this is going to be overkill. Anyone know the weightof 1G TSX trunks?

I've tried many times to do this on my CLS, but the problem is not as much the mounting, but the arms that lift the trunk lid. They are very weak and when I put pressure on them with a strut, when the lid shut, the side with the shock would sit up by the window. I am still looking for a solution, different size struts, load and strokes, and mounting points, but still not there. I took my torsion bars off so I could put better speakers on the back deck.
I've never heard of this. My trunk still works perfectly. Had to zip tie the plastic 'bridge' piece that holds the bars together but thats it. Still stays open and closes perfectly balanced. odd...
