Any difference w/ just K&N filter?

Got my car 2 weeks ago, don't wnat to add CAI or any other major mods, I'm curious if a K&N filter will make any noticeable difference. I think I saw somewhere it was only 2-3 hp, that doesn't sound right.

I didn't think a drop in filter was out yet?

Auto Zone listed one, #2133, they would have to order it so I decided to research it.

I dropped a K&N into my type s about a month after I purchased the car. I do feel a difference, but not a major one. I am sure it helps her breath a litte better. I got mine off the net for about 40 bucks. Can't remember where from. Anyway, after I struggled trying to drop it in, I went back on the net and double checked the part number. It was corrrect, but the filter did not quite fit. The rubber around the edges was a little too big for the air box. I finally ended up trimming a litte bit of the outside edge rubber and got it to fit. Seems to be working ok. I have pulled and cleaned it a couple of times and it is catching plenty of dirt. Maybe I just got a defective one. It is rigged, but it fits now.

bmil128,

A K&N drop in filter will not make much HP. 2-5HP is the usual gains that you'll see in a Honda/Acura,as the intake system is not as restrictive as you think for a stock set up. Having said that, a CAI would definitely produce HP that you can feel and see on the Dyno. The K&N will at least provide some improved gas mileage

i think the one sneakypete has is the one for the -p. i remember people talking about that they had one for the -p and it doesnt' fit the -s unless they modify it a little.

I was just about to post a question about these K&N drop-ins. Any part number for type-s yet?

How do they work? Meaning are they cotton with some type of oil. Do they come with the oil or is it extra $$$

How often do you have to clean them (every 3000 miles/3months???), and how much of a pain is it? Extra expense for cleaning kit?? How is it re-applying the oil, and is it easy to know if you got it right?

Really wondering are they worth it over the stock paper filter (which gets changed every 10,000 miles).

Thanks!!

fast-daddy-car,

I had one in my Lude Si, and the K&N came with the oil separately. You had to oil it prior to putting it in. Instructions were provided. Very easy to do.

The drop in K&N needs only to be cleaned every 50,000; however, if you drive in "Sahara" like conditions, then they recommend cleaning it sooner like 5000-10000 miles. The cleaning kit was under $20 when I bought it. You have to wash out the oil by running water through the TB side to wash away the oil and dirt on the side facing the resonator. After that, you have to apply the oil again until you get a pink/reddish color for each pleat of the filter. Very easy!

I ordered my K&N air filter before i got my car and i installed it within hours of picking the car up. i've had the aem cai on my previous 98 prelude and it was great, and i know its great on the cl-s as well. however, i decided to get the K&N filter b/c i didn't want the extra noise from the intake. also, i didn't want to constantly worry about water. from what i know, the aem gives about 8-10 hp (6-8 hp with bypass valve), and the K&N gives about 4-5 hp. you can definetely feel a little difference in power, and you can even here the intake "hiss" when you turn the car off ..so that proves it allows more air through. personally, i'd rather save $200 at the loss of 3-5 more hp and added noise. also, for some reason i feel if a car flys by me quickly without much noise it just sounds cool....kinda like how a chipped S4 sounded the other day when he whipped my ass like no tomorrow.

yeah....i hear that "hiss" too when i shut off the car. was wondering where that was coming from...so i put back the stock filter...no "hiss". i guess it's due to the k&n filter.

According to the K&N web site, the part number for the CL-S is 33-2178. The 33-2133 is for the CL "except -S". Going to order mine tomorrow.

ok, just ordered the 33-2178 for the type-s. will have it tomorrow (from local store)

Do these come pre-oiled from the factory, or do you have to oil it?

And with the k&n I should be set for about 20,000 miles before cleaning it.

how tough is it to open our filter box?

Yes, they come preoiled.

and for opening the filter, piece of cake, just unsnap the metal thingys.

But once you do get teh filter, it's not really a 'drop-in' more like trim the corner a little then drop in.

Well when I first got mine back in oct~sept. I put it in and couldn't close the damn intake cover so my car stalled. I pulled over afterwards and found out it wasn't sealing properly due to the big ass ruber molding. I called K&N and they said trim the rubber off a little. I cut about may be 1/8 inch in the upper right hand corner (when your staning in front of your drivers side facing the passengerside). After that, the lid closed perfectly and it improved a lot of gas milage. Even more w/ the headers.

I think that K&N must have fixed the fitting problem. I just got mine yesterday, and it dropped right into the airbox - closed and sealed fine. K&N part # 33-2178 for the CL-S
