Another try at the dragstrip
Another try at the dragstrip
As some of you may remember I haven't had much luck at getting any good runs at the dragstrip. 3 trips to the track and only 1 run each time b/f it was too crowded or it rained.
Well, last night was looking pretty nice so after work I went to give it one more try. Some dark clouds were looming in the distance but here in Seattle that doesn't mean it'll rain.
Got to the track and got into line. Not too many cars there so I was pretty hopeful to get at least few runs in. As I got in the right lane what do you think lined up beside me? Yes! An E39 M5 with a really cocky guy driving it. His every other word started with an 'F'. Anyway, about a 1/2 hour of waiting in line and I finally get my first run in (did I mention against the M5?)
Light went green and we took off!
CTSV : M5
60' 2.121 : 2.562
1/4 12.871 : 14.535
MPH 115.70 : 104.46
I must have put no less than 10-12 bus lengths on him. When we lined back up again he came over to me and the first thing out of his mouth wasn't 'Hey, nice run' it was just excuse after excuse. Traction control, bogged it, yada yada yada. It happens to all of us but it was just funny.
I ended up racing 3 more times - once against a 13.8 @ 101 Evo, once against a 14.6 @ 96 E36 M3 and once more against the M5. He did better that time.
CTSV : M5
2.168 : 2.228
12.850 : 13.674
116.11 : 105.40
The 116mph was my highest trap. There was a Viper there too that was only trapping 116mph. Not sure of the year or model but it looked very nice. I thought it should be trapping higher. He came with the M5 guy though so maybe he couldn't drive either. They ended up being ok guys in the end but they just had something to prove in the beginning. Baby-V humbled them a bit!

There is one smaller pulley that I've had my eye on... :0 Bumps boost from about 5psi to about 7psi. Most guys running it dyno 480+ with the new pulley. Detonation is always a concern though and cooling the intake charge with a methanol injection or equivalent is recommended to be safe.
With DR's, a guy on the Caddy forum has run 12.0xx@118. Not bad.

Its too bad you cant use all of the power. Hell, my stock H/C/I 5.0 mustang with a Vortech on it should run mid 12's without too much effort. You'd think a blown LS6 would be at least low 12's even if you have to baby it out of the hole.
Oh well, i'm sure its pretty fast from a roll. 116mph is pretty nice.

A Vortech'd Mustang is a drag-monster. Solid rears definitely help them get moving!

His car probably weighs 1,000 pounds more than your Mustang.
Actually steve, only about 500lbs more (3300 vs. 3800). Cast iron block & heads really dont help my piggy.
But yeah, GM is known for weak rear ends. Its too bad they have so much axle hop, thats why I dont like IRS.
My dad's 03 Cobra couldnt launch hard to save its life without hopping, and thats hell on the halfshafts.
BTW whats the CR on the LS6? Must be pretty high to only run 5.5psi.

I can't remember off hand the CR. I think it's 11.x : 1 or so. The IRS does give alot of wheel hop. Not good for drag racing. However, I also take this car to the road course. That's where the IRS works miracles in such a heavy car like the CTS-V. There's nothing like keeping up with 911's in the twisties and then walking them down in the straights in a frickin' Caddy!

But yeah, IRS in tight corners is nice. More predictable power application that solid axle. I have road-raced mine, and its sometimes a crapshoot whether it spins the inside tire or not.
