Alpine Nav road test

Well after sending my credit card to hell on fire I have a Nav up and running .I never really appreciated how useful this gadget was untill I owned one .3 times in one week this thing got me out of bad traffic .With some 11 million point of interest from the supplied software this Alpine unit rocks .It takes a bit of getting used to as the software is quite a bit different than our standard Acura stuff but once you get the remote figured out it is truly amazing .Anybody considering getting Nav for a non Nav equipped car might want to have a look at this thing .It is awfully expensive but one traffic jamand I was hooked .

NO
I believe he got STUCK in a traffic jam and the directions that the system provided allowed him to find another way around in an area he wasn’t familiar with.

That is correct .I got stuck this morning in New Jerseys finest traffic messes and the "DETOUR" button got me to work with no worries .However both Alpine and Pioneer I believe are working on RDS equipped nav system that will guide you round the jams without you doing a thing .These systems exist in Europe already and are sloooooooooowly coming onstream here .This will allow radio stations to broadcast not only their own info but also traffic and weather info so that your nav system is even more useful.

The HU is a DVD/CD/VCD player with a flip out screen .The nav is a seperate control unit in the trunk .I added the XM module and am going to add a cd changer and a backup camera .I also have the rear screen and wireless IR headsets from pioneer .The HU is fantastic with a great screen .

Currently in my car are :
IVA-D900 headunit
NAV-200 package , this package comes with the NVE-N852A brain and a TME-M580 screen .The brain is plugged into the IVA-D900 and the screen is now used for rear entertainment on a Panavise stand .I did not want to use headrest monitors due to the peculiar way VW chose to make the seat frame .
TUA-T020XM tuner also resides in the car for satellite music .
I added a set Pioneer IR wireless headphones for the rear seaters .
Added to this was a JL 10 inch box with a JL 250 AMP .We felt that this was sufficient and we were right .The sound is very good considering we are still using the original Monsoon amp and speakers .But based on what I read these components are actually pretty good and as far as my ears go this is good enough for now.
Although it is illegal the front screen has been modded to play movies while the car is in motion. We are working on a system to get rid of the annoying switches that were needed for that trick .
Next up is a CD changer from Alpine which is hopefully small enough to bury in the glovebox .Although I can use the in dash DVD for CD playback I would prefer to just use that for the DVD function .
Total damage is in the thousands not counting the time to install all of the stuff .I have wanted one of these systems since I first saw a flipout screen headunit so this for me is one dream come true .I installed all of it myself and overall it was straightforward but trying to make all of the peripherals dissapear in the car is tough as the GTI is seriously lacking good places to stuff electronics .
I made a small change to the headunit so that it would fit flush in the dash (almost flush there is not enough room back there ) as opposed to the standard install which looked awkward in the dashboard .
The IVA-D900 can run 5.1 digital Dolby surround sound with the addition of an outboard processor .That is a project for next year as at that point I will be forced to buy a 5 channel amp to run the whole show .For now I have Dolby 2.0 or 2.1 (whichever it is ) and it sounds very impressive .If anybody wants to host a few pics I can shoot a few .The install was not meant to be a show quality setup but rather we went for making as much of it dissapear similar in fashion to what the factory would do if they installed this stuff .

Jens, the IVA-D900 should have a built in Dolby Digital decoder - I don't think you need the PXA-H700.

It has the ability to decode but not to process it I think .I think I still have to go for the external gadgetry to make it a 6 channel setup .
