Well, I'd say gas because it is connected to the engine via a belt which spins the compressor, no? The engine in turn needs electric and gas to run, so I guess both.

I assume by this question you mean what is used to cool the iside of the car?Modern autos make use of a refrigerant known as R134 A or more typically "freon".This gas is circulated through the AC system by the compressor on the engine.Through expansion and contraction of the gas the air entering the passenger compartment is cooled.The system depends on the engine's power to operate the compressor and the cars electrical system to operate the various electronic controls and fans.Jens

You are quite correct Tom2 in your refrence to the Freon thing but most people simply refer to it as Freon to keep it simple.Jens
