If I was to purchase an after market CD/mp3 player.... would the steering wheel control still operate the volume control/next track......

I added an Alpine CHA-S634 6 CD Changer to our 99 TL-P and can still use controls. It's a pretty easy install.

I installed an Eclipse deck and added an IR transmitter that effectively works as the remote control and hooked it up to the steering wheel controls.

Try searching the forums, and if you can't find anything and want more info send me a PM and I'll dig up the info.

Also, if you're planning to do the install yourself, be warned that taking the dash appart is more work than you'd expect and you need to start from the back of the center console and work forward.

also, i've read that the IR transmitters are painfully slow. i'm used to not using the steering wheel audio controls, though i do miss them.

 

I think it depends on which transmitter/which deck....mine works great.
