AEM Bypass Valve - How does it work?

AEM Bypass Valve - How does it work?

It appears to be nothing more than a foam joiner between two pipes. Anyone know the theory behind it?

The foam is a "wrapper" for when the actual "flaps" inside the bypass valve opens (when enough vacuum is created from the engine sucking on a soaked filter). Since the valve is trying to get air from the engine compartment (in lieu of water from the soaked filter), it needs a "mini-filter" to keep garbage from coming into the engine via the bypass valve. Hence, the need for the foam cover.

The bypass valve has little plastic "flappers"

Thanks Eric, that clears it up. You can't see any of that stuff in the actual unit.
