AEM Bypass valve

The foam piece that goes around my bypass is torn in the middle. Does that matter? Can I / should I replace it?

Also, the sound at idle is kind of loud, but if I push the pieces together where the bypass is connected it gets a little quieter...is the bypass supposed to have some give to it ya think? Could it be leaking there, and if it is, is that really bad?

I'm going to put up a pic in a little bit....

Sounds like the problem everyone else has when their CAI bypass broke... Mine did the exact same thing. It was making almost like a UFO noise... A humming sound...

And with the foam being torn... Replace it either with another bypass of get a 3" diameter peice of silicone hose and get rid of the bypass altogether...

Get it replaced FAST !!!!! .The Aem bypass is a great unit but sadly somewhat fragile .However if you allow it to stay there broken in half the flapper seal can get loose and enter the intake .This can jam the throttle blade in a partially open position .
Aem was subject to a recall on this to have a plastic clip installed to prevent this from happening but i have seen in some cases that even this did not prevent the flapper valve from getting loose and jamming the Throttle .Get it taken car of fast you DO NOT want to be in a runaway CL .

The bypass is more hassle than it's worth. Which is why I removed mine. I had two that broke.

ok thanks for all the info. I live in AZ so probably no real reason to have the bypass anyway. If I want to get rid of it, what do I do? Scrib you said silicon hose? Where do I get that? How do I attach it to the intake????

Sorry about all the questions but as you can tell I don't know jack shit about intakes.

Oh hey also my e brake light is on every morning for the first 15 minutes or so I drive the car. The brake is definitely not on...any idea why this would happen?

Yeah...

It's the coupler that attaches the CAI to the throttle body... The black silicone sleeve that says AEM. That'll do the trick. You'd just connect the two CAI pieces with that and use the clamps from the bypass valve to make sure it says in place.

I had a hell of a time finding anything in the auto stores that would work for this application. However, Scalbert mentioned something that is readily available, from what I remember. You might want to PM him and see. I think I paid something like $15 for that focking AEM sleeve, shipped...

I bought some 3" rubber coupling and it was too big...so I took the foam off the bypass and had a look. The ring was just cracked in middle and coming apart. I just superglued it back together. The foam had to get tossed, but I couldn't see what purpose it served.

Do you think thats ok? It hooked right back up, seemed good as new.

and by the way...55 bucks for that bypass new? its a flimsy piece of plastic with a little strip of rubber...what a rip off.

So my cars not going to blow up or anything right...should be legit I think...any reason not to do what I did? Did that foam serve any purpose?

That strip of foam actually serves as an air filter Beetroot .WHen the valve opens (orange rubber part ) the air is drawn in at that point instead of the normal air filter .To keep the intake free of debris a foam filter is placed around the valve itself so the engine does not ingest anything that could cause damage .Like I said get it replaced or install a piece of hose .

Shawn that is just an add on air filter not a safety valve .WHat this thing does is more or less defeat the purpose of a cold air kit by allowing hot underhood air into the intake .

Yea, I know. We’ve discussed this before here a few months ago.
I just know my AEM Bypass is 3YRS old and probably ready to be replaced soon anyway and I’m considering this one.

According to what most people say the little rubber flaps on the AEM are open during WOT anyway.
So that’s the same way this guy operates.

Still thinking about it. I found one online for 39.99 shipped.

Damn...foam is an air filter, how did I not realize that.

Anyway does anyone know the diameter of the AEM intake? I was told yesterday its 3 inches, and I bought a 3 inch sleeve for it, but its definitely smaller. I'm going to check AEM's website but if anyone knows offhand could you just let me know? Thanks.
