Saturn Tops J.D. Power List
Last updated: 2002-07-19

J.D. Power and Associates' 2002 Customer Service Index study puts GM's Saturn brand at the top, the first time a non-luxury nameplate has won the honor since the mid-1980s. Saturn's devotion to its customers ranked it just ahead of Nissan's luxury brand, Infiniti, with Toyota's Lexus division rounding out the top three. Interestingly, American companies control six of the top 10 brands in the 2002 survey: GM leads with Saturn, Cadillac (4th place), Buick (6th) and Saab (8th), while Ford placed with Volvo (5th) and Lincoln (10th). The top 10finishers were as follows:

Saturn 900
Infiniti 897
Lexus 894
Cadillac 890
Volvo 883
Buick 882
Acura 881
Saab 875
BMW 873
Lincoln 868

I don't understand Saturn's loyalty.

My wife bought a 1997 Saturn based on it's high consumer ratings (and the fact that she just doesn't really get into the whole care thing).

At the time, the Saturn SL2 met her needs in a car (not many) and pricing. She liked the no-haggle setup and wanted to do the whole shopping experience for herself.

We heard good things about the Saturn - reliable, hearty, easy to work on.

Five years later (and probably 55K miles) she has gone through
and most of this in the first three years of ownership. Although some of this was taken care of under warranty, she had to fight tooth and nail (and have an attorney call) to get the bum sunroof module fixed.

She's found that Saturn's customer service representatives are mostly rude and mean assholes. You have to FIGHT to get anything done under warranty, for instance, the alternator went bad after 1.5 years and they didn't want to cover it.

Saturn is not a cheap car either - the purchase price wasn't anything to 'write home' about and service is the same as other cars...the same $40 bullshit for a oil change.

Saturn, in our experience, represents the kind of quality that American shitbox cars are known for. Yeah GM! As soon as she's motivated (probably next year) she'll get a new car. She's been looking towards a TL or MDX - a significant upgrade.
