Acura Techs Please Respond - Tranny Service for the timebomb

5AT. Rebuilt 30k miles ago.

I've been searching for this info, but I can only find heresay -- "The dealer will...."

I'd like to hear from some of the techs on the board. What does Acura do for the 30K trans service? Is is only a single drain/refill? My friend owns and independent (no specialty though), who thinks the system would be purged by the dealer.

I've created a list of maintenance to do since the car will now be staying with me (probably for 5-10 more years). Trans service is a must. I'm thinking of just doing the 3x3 myself, but if there is a factory procedure I can leverage, I'd look into that or may just pay the dealer. I have many tools myself, and I have access to a garage with many more, so, I'm not too worried about the logistics if someone could just describe (or point me to) the correct procedures.

The service manual mentions two different capacities:
2.9 qt at a fluid change, or,
7.6 at at "overhaul"

Overhaul to me means "rebuild". I can seem to find any other info around this procedure to see if I'm making the right assumption. I'm getting the maintenance list going, and once that's done, it's time to implement a good mod to regain my interest in the car. Not sure what that will be yet, buy I need to get the fire lit again.

I've been searching all over this forum. I can't find exactly what I need, and I've found a good deal of broken links for various DIYs. As these cars get older, this info will be more and more pressing, hopefully we can get some updated responses and links in the DIY threads.

If I've missed something, please flame away. I use forums for ALL of my cars and understand the use of search. Unfortunately, my CL has taken sort of a back seat to the enthusiasm over the past few years, but I'm hoping to re-kindle the flame. It is a great car.

I do a 3x3 drain/fill and I've gone through 3 trannys (and on a 99TL with the 4-speed) so honestly I don't feel like the fluid changes make a huge difference.

With that said, I would still do the 3x3.

3x3 is huge man.

I did it to my moms mdx it was slipping in gear and all sorts of shyt. And I had to do it on a sunday and honda is closed so I used the WRONG trans fluid and OMFG

worked like a dream, it's 20000KMS later and we tow hot tubs with it for the company and she's good to go still!!!!!

and we thought a trans overhaul was imminent 20000KMS ago. SO.

I would have to say I am a firm believer is changing the fluid on the reg. I do mine every 20000kms since I got my trans rebuilt 26000kms ago

yeah I agree with you, but i also think maybe a single change is better as opposed to a 3x3 and I believe thts why the dealers dont do it (3x3).

I just had my changed and the 1st oil and 2nd tht comes out is really really dirty.
But my only issue now is that the car seems to shift a lot slower, its like it takes its time. I almost have to drive it aggressively in SS mode to do any worth while pass or join highway traffic.
at this point i am telling myself that I should have just done the single change (drain, fill) and left it at that. BECOS immediately after the first ATF change i test drove the car around the highway and it pulled and drove nicer than its doing now......so i am sort of confused and got some mixed feelings abt this one.

If you replace 3qt every 15K miles you dont need 3x3. We don't know if 3x3 helps... tranny fail not because of fluid

Thanks for the replies. With the previous tranny, it went within 100 miles of a service, but, it was also rather overdue.

I've got a case of Honda ATF-Z1, so 3x3 is coming one night this week. I like the idea of just draining and filling every 10k too. Maybe I'll implement swapping the fluid every 3rd oil change or something.....

yea... in all honesty tho even after 15000miles of w/e driving in hot climate. even the first drain of the 3x3 should not been brown at all. dark red yes, but not brown.

I got my trans rebuilt ON MY 01 CL-S and after roughly 20000kms I changed the fluid out and only the first change was a darker red...

so if it's a different color i'd change it more often or look for the culprit
