Acura 3.2CL vs. Toyota Camry Solara

Yes, I know this is an Acura website, but what would you chose (or for some of you, already have chosen)...the Acura 3.2CL-P or a Toyota Camry Solara SLE V6?

You're really ruining this post...LOL
Point is, the CL-P is not much more than a loaded Accord Coupe V6, and besides you'd have killed me if I had discussed an Accord in a CL Forum...

I had originally thought about the Solara SLE V6 but I checked out its 0-60 time and I knew why it was called the 'Slolara'... to get all the 'upgrades' through TRD woulda cost more than the price of a CL-S so I chose the CL-S and I am happy for it. =) ( Tte upgrades being HP boost, larger tires, sways, springs, etc).

No contest!

It's a nice car, but I put it in the Status/Sebring/AccordGrand Prix league.

Solara is too common for me much like a Camry. Very common in NJ. They do make a nice convertible tho. Personally, I prefer a "pervertible" - the top goes up and the driver goes down -

I wanted and waited on a Solara convertible for over a year.

I wanted a BMW 3-series convertible and I waited for the newer body style to catch up to the convertible, and I waited and waited for months.

I saw the CL one day, made up my mind to buy it the next day, and haven't looked back to Solara since.

BMW 330ci convertible, that's another story.

Comparisons like this is where the value of the CL really starts to shine. At first glance, you'd assume the CL was more expensive. However, a quick check at edmunds.com shows you that's not quite the case.
Solara
25165 Base
455 Dest
250 side airbags
99 center console with armrest
167 floor mats (with a trunk mat)
498 wood trim (RIPOFF!!)
200 6cd JBL stereo
900 power sunroof
300 traction control
28,034 total

CL
28,460 total incl destination
So for an extra $426 you get an extra year on your warranty, memory seats, heated seats, heated mirros and xenon headlights in a car with an extra 25hp.

Hmmm... a no-brainer!!!

A TRD Solara would probably kick the crap out of a CL-S, but I think the CL-S looks ten times better.

I go with the cl-p, even though i have a cl-s , its still no contest. My friend and soon to be roomate has a solara, so pics to follow soon when i get into my house, and its nice but it is by no means anyway close to the acura in styling or speed. The solara is ok as being a 2 door camrey but that is really all it is. The cl-s is so much of a beter car and it really would be worth the little extra money that the acura would cost.
GO CL-s, ITs worth the extra dinero!!!

Well let's see, supercharged the TRD solara will have 300+ horsepower, 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and 1/4 mile in 14.3 I guess it will make your CL-S feel like SH*T when it kicks your ass and I suppose that's why is has 3 of 4 letter from TERD. Oh By the way all thise for about 2000 more than CL-s with NAv.

Got a source for those numbers? I've heard similar numbers before but no one can seem to find any tests to back them up. There was a thread on IS300.net not too far back that had one of the car mags test a Stage 3 TRD Solara (the most powerful one and likely the one you're talking about). IT only had 270hp (the stage 1 has 242hp) and did 0-60 in 6.1. Not terribly impressive. And for $2K you can add headers and intake to your CL-S and you're right there NOT getting your butt kicked anymore

I'll try to find the source for the #'s. What are the #'s on the CL-s w/ headers & intake? How about headers, intake & exhaust. Do they make a supercharger for the CL-S?

I drove both, and I went with the CL-P. I was also considering the Accord V6. The Solara was third in my book. Pricey for the features, and it handled like a sled next to the Acura and the Honda. It was quiet (and slower ) than the Honda products, and maybe the bass on the stereo was a little better.

Other than that, no contest. The interior in the CL beats the snot out of the Solara for class/fit/finish. I'm not a racer, but you could immediately tell the 25 HP difference in the two. And the driver's seat was like an old Barcalounger... great to sit in and watch TV, but crappy for driving.

Look at it like this (I know this is crude, no flames please...) the Solara is a 2 door Camry... the CL-P is a 2 door TL. What would you rather drive?

I'm guessing that headers and intake (won't count exhaust as Comptech's exhaust only adds 2hp) will reduce 0-60 times by about 0.3 - 0.4 sec and maybe 0.4 - 0.5 in the 1/4 mile. Taking an average of stock numbers that I've seen for the CL-S (6.6 and 15.0) you'd end up with a CL-S that does 0-60 in 6.2-6.3 and 1/4 mile in 14.5-14.6. Just a tick off the numbers I've seen for the Solara. OF course, this is not exactly a scientific approach. And there are always the numerous real-world variables to consider. Just the fact that the Solara has a 5spd gives us an edge in any drag races. If the guy doesn't know how to launch, he could very well be going down! At any rate, I'd hope that a supercharged Solara is faster than a CL-S. I just don't think even the Stage 3 is THAT much faster.

Comptech is making a supercharger for the Accord V6 and its supposed to fit the TL/CL too. We'll see.

Goldie...That's real cute! I thought I joined a real man's BBS?

Who wants a Solara! Like all other Toyotas, they are just too expensive for what they are. Don't you want to drive a more unique car, something not mass produced like a condom. CL is the only way to go!

Comptech is working on a superchager for the CL/CL-S/TL/Accord engine as we speak, and already makes an exhaust system and headers. The CL-S does 6.4 seconds to 60mph, and the CL-P takes 7.2 seconds (lowest I've seen) to 60mph, which is quicker than a stock Solara. Once that supercharger comes out, strap it onto a CL-P and it will blow that TERD Solara out of the water and will cost about the same. Question however, do you think adding the Comptech supercharger would void the warrenty on the CL? I know since TRD is an in-house tuner, Toyota will fix all of the components if anything were to happen to them and won't void the warrenty. This could be the only downside to the Comptech supercharger, even with Comptech having years of experience producing relaible products. Any thoughts?

I only wish that the CL-S had a manual transmission. I think that would complete the car. I really would hate to lose to a TRD solara but the numbers I saw say that I would. I probably won't ever see a TRD solara around here, most of them here ae the 4 cyl slushboxes.
