Actuating actuator but...!

Anybody remember.
Back during the talk about whether a CL's actuator (IMRC) was functioning was it possible that even if the car's actuator did turn that the second induction still might not open? In other words can the switch visibly turn and yet mechanically still no second induction?

Thank you

HEY!!! where were you??? you missed a great meet.Yes it is possible I believe for the system to fail in this mode.Since it is cable operated it is always possible for the cable to fail in a non visible area.Jens

In addition to seeing the actuator move, you should also hear a change in the intake sound as well as a light metallic clink sound (the best analogy for that is the sound of a Zippo lighter opening )

Happy troubleshooting (and good luck) if you think yours may be malfunctioning.

Yeah, and if all else fails take it to the dealer.

Otherwise, you could do what Tom2 not scalbert did and "pop the top"

It's called family obligation. Both teen boys had opening day baseball games to attend and judging by the both games dismal final scores I'd think my presence at the fantastic meet would have been the only homerun of the day. Defintely next time.

Jens how much of a hassle would the IMRC be to check say if I come in for an oil change? I mention the actuator because even though it visibly moves I do not hear the second induction sounds like I used to. My kid who has ridden with me since the day I picked up the car said the same about the sound and the car's lack of pickup. I think he's right. I dont feel that post 3800rpm pickup that I can remember from a while back. Possibly a quick check can verify or would it be something more complicated?

Thanks as always
Rob

Hey, bud,

If you're gonna use my picture, at least give me credit

Tom
On your pic were you checking the functioning of your actuator or just checking out what the breathing looked like?

Thank you

At first I was checking to make sure it was functioning, then I decided to "pop the top" to see exactly how it worked. I figured that I'd snap a few pics to post here, since I had it opened up.

Can you really hear this "clink" with the engine screaming at 4000 RPM?

I haven't done this test in a while, but I do recall being able to hear the plenum open up, but that was back in august or so...

Al or Jens,

Any resolution to this issue? I'm wondering because I may have the same problem. I had an Acura dealership look at it (IMRC) - they said it's working correctly. Like you, my car doesn't feel like it has the power it had when it was new and I don't notice the change in induction sound @ 3800. I'll have them look at it again during my next oil change, so I would appreciate any updates on this issue.

Otto

Doh! I just had the car in for some exhaust issue and a tire rotation. I was with my kid and we were trying to get out in a hurry to hit the NYC autoshow and I forgot to ask Jens to check into it. The actuator was turning at about 3800rpm but it still didn't feel/sound quite the same. But a couple of days before I took it in it was warm outside, had the windows and roof open and I was mashing it. Seat of the pants feel and it seemed quick again so I thought maybe it was because I was driving with the windows closed for a few months and that was that. But I won't forget next time and I'll get them to check it out. Might be in a couple of weeks though. If you have the same issues please post what happens.

Good luck

You dont see any power spike on the Dyno at this RPM, and I've never been able to hear the secondary intake transition mechanically or airflow wise. The mechanical stop is like a throttle stop and thats hard to hear as the actuator pulls with only marginal force. If you are trying to "feel" its engagement as a power surge, you may always think your car is broke because the Dyno doesn't support this.

...mind you...when I say you can hear it open, it is only when you are standing outside in front of the car with the hood open. I dont think you'll ever hear it from within the cabin-even with the windows open.

Open the hood and blip the throttle a few times if you hit it hard enough you will see the little lever on the end of the intake plenum snap open.Sorry Rob I forgot all about that myself too.Jens
