Accidentally or Mistakenly shifting to 'N'??

I know in the manual that it mentions not to shift out of 'P' or 'N' unless you're on the brake pedal (i'm assuming while stopped).

but what happens when you accidentally shift the car from 'D5' to 'N' while moving?

It's pretty easy to do accidentally as well as mistakenly as I've done it several times already. I would be driving down a freeway with my hand resting on the shifter, and once I had to slam on my brakes because someone decides to cut me off, and the momentum causes me to shift the car into 'N' as it's a straight movement forward on the shifter.

and (thishappens more often) the other case is when I'm driving in city w/ 'D4', get on the freeway, switch to 'D5', and then back onto slow streets, and then back to freeway and forgot I was already in 'D5' and shift to 'N' by accident (thinking I was going from D4 to D5). I'll usually notice this right away 'cuz the indicator will show red and I'm usually accelerating, so the tach flies up. I usually release the accelerator and let the engine slow to idle (but still at 40+mph) before shifting to 'D5'.

When it shifts from neutral to 'D5', the tranny engages pretty smoothly like a normal shift though. But i know that the manual may imply not to do this.

This bad? As many times as this has happened, I don't think so, but what do you Acura service guys think?

there have been times where i "thought" i was in SS, shifted to N, and listen to the engine rev to red-line and bounce off the limiter...but it's only been a few times...when that happens, i let the RPM's go down to around 1K and shift back into D5 while still in motion...sometimes i get that nasty loud click/clang like when i go from Neutral to Reverse, and sometimes i don't...im usually doin less than 30 if i make this mistake.

i've gone to Neutral when doin 70+ and back to SS with no issues, hesitations, etc.

I wouldn't image it GREAT for the tranny, but I wouldn't worry about random missed shifts.

I posted this b4!

This has happened to me plenty of times (frequent SS driver). If you do a search, you will see some of the comments. I called the dealer, nothing major-nor minor happens....unless it a everyday every hour thing.

No problem with going into neutral

I don't know what you're all talking about with problems when going into neutral from D5. You can be driving 200 km, it doesn't matter, as long as when you go back into D5 you're RPMs aren't higher then about 3000. If they are you will feel it a little and that's not good for the tranny. Going from neutral to reverse while going forward, on the otherhand, is not good for the car, neither is going from neutral to D5 while going backwards (you get the point)

I love how shitty our tranny sounds when you're in a parking lot and you stop and go into reverse to back your car into a spot and it CLANKS and then you stop and put it back into drive to straighten out and it CLANKS again and then stop and back into reverse to finish parking and it CLANKS again.

No wonder the thing shits itself.

I wouldn't worry.........its not like there is any sort of lock out like there is for going into reverse. I think its like a safety thing.

same here. i learned to just stop using full auto altogether. sportshift 99% of the time now (1% is for gridlock).

i've been using full auto mode more and more lately, d4 in town. yes i have mistakenly thought i was in ss and switched into neutral 2 or 3 times, but always got off the gas instantly, never hit the rev limiter. it would be nice if there was some sort of lock out to prevent this, as i'm sure most have done it.

i think suddenly shift to n while the car is moving is going to give tranny a lot of pressure.so i only shift to n or p when my cars are compeletly stop.

I usually put it in N after I start to back out so I kinda coast to a stop, w/o using the brakes, and then put in D5 after I stop completely. Also when I'm coming down my street I'll put in N and coast to my driveway. I guess I'm still used to a stick. There's a low spot in the driveway where the car sits w/o using the brake, so I let it find that spot while in N and then put it in park. I didn't think any of this would hurt the tranny since I'm never on the gas when I shift to N. I haven't heard or felt any thing unusual while doing this either.

i know...isn't it a wonderful sound...it's so loud, it wakes the neighbors...sometimes when i come home from the bars on weekends at like 3AM, i'll do it a couple times since i gotta make a 3-point turn to park my car, shut the door loudly, and make the car BEEP when i set the alarm...just to let everyone know im home hehe
