Welcome. The availability of the 6 sp. manual in '03 is the major difference.

If the addition of the 6mt isn't a concern for you, the only major differences between the 01-02 & 03 are:

1) the tail lights on the '03 are different
2) the side mirrors on the '02+ were made smaller.
3) headlights on the '03 were given a dark shade to them.
4) '03 don't have the "driving lights".
5) '03 got different exhaust tips.
6) On the inside the '03 was given a metallic trim on ebony interiors.
7) 03's have auto up on the driver window.
8) the cup holder in the 01 isn't as good as the 02 or 03 (auto only).
9) '01-02 have chrome door handles, '03 doesn't.
10) '01-02 have five spoke machined wheels. '03 has a six spoke silver painted wheel.
11) 02 and 03 models have more cabin noise insulation.
12) new steering wheel emblem for '03.

I edited in a lot of what everyone else said. As you can see, nothing really major except for the 6mt on 2003's.

Correction, only the 03's have auto up on the windows. My 02 didn't have it. But the major differences is the 6 speed. I'll say it though, be carfull buying a used 01, or 02 CLS. The auto tranny's have problems. The 03 tranny is fixed. Make sure if you do get a used one, it has the extended free warranty for 100K miles on the tranny, & try to find out if the tranny was replaced yet. ALso by teh looks of your old car, be warned, there not much in exterior upgardes for this car. No body kits execpt one which is fugly.

02 doesn't have auto up at all

From the pic of your 'lude, it looks like you are big into exterior aesthetics. It is very difficult in finding good body kits for this car. Majority of the ones shown are custom made. Or you can get the JT Auto one...but that looks like crap.

Now, if this guy up in Canada (see sticky in "Car Talk") hooks up a kit, then we may have a decent exterior mod to work with. Otherwise wheels are a drop is all you get with the CL.

Other notable differences
- the cup holder in the 01 isn't as good as the 02 or 03 (auto only)
- 01-02 have chrome door handles, 03 doesn't
- 01-02 have five spoke machined wheels. 03 has a six spoke (?) silver painted wheel

I believe the 02 and 03 models have more cabin noise insulation, and possibly a bit thicker windshield, too.

Brand new 03s may have the newer tranny design without the flaw that causes some of the othere ones to fail, but the older ones have a 100,000 mi. warranty to help offset the problem.

Personally, I think that if you want an auto, you should just look for the best price you can find for the color +navi you want. If you were in my area, I'd let you buy mine so I could get a 6-speed.

Why sell the lude? I think that looks nice. If you're sick of driving stick then jus get the 02. Not much of a diff in 01-02. Either one will suit you. I'm sure you can still find new as opposed to used. I got the 01 and on 2nd tranny. Car still feels new to me.

Isn't the grille on the 03's painted to match the car, where as it's "chrome" on the 01s and 02s?

You would better to get the 6 speed. Have you heard of Acura's major problem with their automatic transy? I think more than two members here almost got killed because of the faulty automatic transy. You can do a search on this issue.

transy replacement cost about $3800-4500 if it is out of warranty. Some members have already gone through fourth transy already..

I'd seriously consider getting an extended warranty if you get a new CL just to cover the tranny. If you get an auto that is. And especially if you get the NAV. I think they run about $700-1000 for 7 yrs.

Also, the '03 does not have the driving lights and sometimes is really dicey driving in snow BC of the ultra-bright Xenon headlights.. They tend to illuminate the snow about 5' in front of you really well but you can't see much beyond that.

And I like the new wheel design. It *appears* like they wouldnt' scratch as easily.. Have to wait and see. I think the car-washes are the #1 culprit tho.

Good Luck!

Why get an extended warranty if you buy an auto CL? It's covered by a factory warranty for 7 yr/100k. It's not like it's not tranferable. 02 would seem to be the better choice...cheaper and it offers the added sound insulation...while retaining the nicer lookin stocks.

The extra warranty on the tranny is included on all models that use the somewhat mis-engineered tranny. We seem to have a higher percentage of failures on this board than Acura says is the case for all vehicles with the tranny, but I personally haven't had a problem. I wouldn't let it keep you from choosing a CL, but I know that some here would disagree.

If it goes under warranty, the new tranny and the install are free. If you think you're going to go over the 100,000 mark in the next three years, you might think about getting something else, but otherwise, I think you would be happy with the CL.

so buying a cl 2001-2003 should already have the warranty if the car is within 100,000 miles?

"The extra warranty on the tranny is included on all models that use the somewhat mis-engineered tranny."

Probably should have said "vehicle" instead of "model." 2001 and 2002 models will. Some time in the middle of the 2003 model year, they came out with a new tranny, and any vehicles made with the new tranny don't get the warranty extension.

October 2002

Automatic Transmission Warranty Extension

Dear 3.2TL and 3.2CL Owners:

American Honda is announcing a warranty extension for the automatic transmission on all 2000-02 3.2TLs, all 2001-02 3.2CLs, and some 2003 3.2TLs and 3.2CLs. The automatic transmission and torque converter are now covered for a total of 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date of original sale. We are providing this warranty extension because a higher than normal number of automatic transmissions in certain vehicles may have problems due to defects in material or workmanship beyond the 4-year, 50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.

How do I know if there is a problem with my vehicle's automatic transmission?
If you think your vehicle has a transmission problem, refer to the operating characteristics below. Understanding these characteristics can help you decide if you need to call your Acura dealer.

These characteristics are normal; they should not require you to call your Acura dealer.
  • Quick downshifts. The transmission has a computerized control system called grade logic. When going down a hill, even a light touch of the brake pedal can cause grade lobic to downshift to the next lower gear. Downshifting helps to slow the vehicle through engine braking.
  • Does not always shift through the full range of gears. This can also be caused by the grade logic system keeping the transmission in the optimum gear for different driving conditions.
  • Mechanical noise when selecting a forward or reverse gear. It's normal to hear a slight mechanical noise when moving the shift lever from one gear to another. This noise can sound abnormally loud if any of the windows are down and you are parked next to a wall or another vehicle.
  • Vehicle may not hold its position when stopped on an incline in gear (may roll backward when the brake pedal is released). This can occur on most Acura-made vehicles. It is one of the measures used to improve fuel economy.
  • Hard shifts before the engine warms up. By design, the transmission shifts a little harder when the engine is cold. It returns to smoother shifting when the engine warms up.

These characteristics are not normal; if you experience any of them, call your Acura dealer.
  • While driving, the D5 indicator on the instrument panel flashes.

    D5 Indicator

  • An abnormally loud noise from the transmission.
  • Extremely slow or delayed gear engagement, upshifts, or downshifts.
  • Abnormal gear slippage during upshifts or downshifts.
  • Erratic or excessively harsh shifting.
  • Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) leaks.

In the next few weeks, owners of potentially affected vehicles will be sent a copy of this letter along with reimbursement instructions in case they previously paid to have the transmission repaired or replaced.

It's important to maintain your vehicle's transmission according to the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. Not maintaining the transmission properly can void the warranty coverage.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,

AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO., INC.
Acura Automobile Division

Another difference is that 03s have dual stage front airbags. This is not insignificant.
