99SS vs my 'new' 01 CL-S

New to the CL scene. coming back from the dealer, (granted I bought the car 200 miles away) had a run in with a 99 camaro SS.

Coming out of the tolls we went from about a 20 mph roll, the acura is pretty damn quick. It pulled pretty well, steadily falling behind though, the SS had a length on me by 70 and room to pull in front of me SAFELY by about 110 with a strong pull away.

so far very satisfied with the car. it's put together rather well and will hold it's own on a 2 laner for passing, plus it's a little more refined than my other car. the 99SS my wife was driving, it's cheap and powerful, but truly a weekend and playtime car; the CL-S thus far has the feeling of a great all around vehicle and for the price you just can't beat it.

someday this summer we'll probably line them up for real, this was rather impromptu, but i can surely see this car hanging with mustang GTs and the majority of the import crew, if only the mods weren't so damn expensive for these cars.

Welcome Joe, and good race.

Yeah the car isn't as fast as a SS, but then again, they don't have heated seats. Hope you enjoy your new ride.

if you do intend to do anything to your car i recomend tires first...the stocks cant even handle the factory power let alone if you start to mod...my recomendation toyo T1-S 235/45 they will fit on the stock wheel no problem....then springs(200$) CAI (250$)
if these UR pulleys work out to be what im hoping (350$-400$ inst.) and if it ever comes RES 350$ and MMII 150$ save headers for last...who know by time you're ready for them ,there maybe choices tht drive the price down from the current over 1000$ to around 800$

I have beaten three WS6' to 75mph at which point they walk on me hard...also one Z28 but that race ended at 70mph so they limped away thinking i was faster....

Welcome! Man those SS's are fast! When I raced one I hung in about one car back till about 65-70 and then the car just took off. The SS must have one nasty 3rd gear.

AN SS is definitely something that I won't fuck with.

A regular Z28 isn't that fast though once you get some mods.

welcome aboard!

The SS really isn't anything magical, cat back, and cold air equivalent, probably only 10-15 hp more than the Z28. The Z28, or stock TA/ formula is every bit as formidable as an SS, WS6, or firehawk, so don't discount them, nor be awe inspired by the factory specials. The SS and co look better in my opinion and do handle better, but hte difference is not as significant as that say between a mustang GT and cobra, or for that fact from the P to the S models over here.

I really like the CL-s, the more i drive it the better i like it. It's the perfect balance for me. A few years ago I was driving a grand marquis and a couple of lincoln town cars. I then had two thunderbirds (think of it as a poor man's CL, luxury prevailing slightly over sport (205 hp 280 ft lbs, 3800 lbs), but built with ford 'quality') which was ok, but not enough sport. Then a mustang gt, cobra, pair of camaro SS's and now the CL. sure not as much sport as the SS, or as much fluff as the town car, but a great overall package.

I'll probably do a cold air, and probably tires really soon. I have 4 firestone firehawk sz 50s with about 50% thread from the one mustang i had. They're 245/45s so i think i'm going to try to squeeze them on. Too bad the 275/40s are just a wee bit too wide because I have 4 eagle f1s with 2000 miles on them in the garage. Headers seem a little pricey now.

Has anyone put a cutout on their car? and if so what's the intermediate pipe diameter?

ya racing my own car. my wife was driving, just can't overcome that kind of power. figure the SS is good for 100 more HP than the cl-s. 308 before the lid, maf, few other free mods and with only 1200 miles on the car. it's starting to open up more now, but so are the rattles, creeks, cracks and other GM little extras you get; it's all a trade off with the dollar dictating.
