6 speed transmission problems

Yesterday when i started up my car, shifting into 2nd with the clutch all the way down, i could hear and feel the syncros grinding, i tried a 2nd time and the same thing happened. Third time i tried it worked fine. Since the weather has gotten cold, its been getting a little harder to shift into 2nd when the car is cold. I was thinking maybe is something wrong with the syncros, but any ideas from Jens or anyone else who has had 6 speed problems.

How many miles are on your car?

Mine did that really bad last year when I only had about 5,000 miles on it.
So far this year it’s MUCH less noticeable even though the weather has turned cold.
I have about 16,500 right now.

So it seems this may go away with more use. At least for my car that’s what I’ve seen.

Normal.
All the 5 speed trucks I had were the same way in cold weather. Maybe changing to a thicker gear lube in the tranny would help out when it gets cold.

Mines not done anything like that and it's been pretty cold here already. I only have about 6k on it though.

While I don't have an CL 6spd, mine is sometimes a little rough when first starting out in the cold. Only 3500 miles on my gearbox though.

Sounds like it's just something that comes with the cold weather.

Ummm I think you meant thinner gear lube for colder climates right??

Alot of Northern members reported this problem when their 6spd was new and cold. I bought my CLS in October, so the tranny was new and cold for the first few months. Problems with getting it into second have virtually disappeared even tho' it's been below freezing for the last couple of days (15k miles).

If you've got low miles on it, then the problem will go away as the tranny "wears in" and it gets warmer out.

Another thing I've noticed is if you pull the shifter straight back instead of pulling it towards you going from 1st to second it's smoother.

Happened to me plenty of times, not just in colder weather either. From what i gathered on the board as well as from the tech at the dealership i got my car from its normal.

As most others have stated I experienced this more when my car was new and cold. Seems to have gotten better although the cold weather has just started.
Just a tip, might want to try double clutching into second just for the first few minutes of driving. Might make shifts smoother.

I reported a "notchy" 1st to 2nd shift to my dealer when my car was newer, and they put in a newer manual transmission fluid that Honda recommended. The service manager didn't know what the difference in the fluids was, but we speculated that it might be a bit thinner. It did seem to help somewhat, as did shifting more striaght back from 1-2 rather than pulling towards my body.

thanks for all the info, my car still only has about 6k miles on it, so hopefully the notchiness will go away with time. But has anyone experienced the grinding i had.....i was just real surprised cause the clutch was all the way down, and it happened twice in a row, but hasn't happened since

Mine does that sometimes...already reported it to Acura and they noted it. However, I've experienced this multiple times on different shifts....sometimes on the 1-2 shift and sometimes on teh 2-3 shift. Dealer suspected the synchros but I told them to hold off replacing anything to see if it improves or goes away. So far it hasn't.
