6-speed Trans oil check

Hey guys,

Last week I did the trans oil check after reading about a couple of cars leaking because they had too much oil in them. It was also stated that the shifting from 1st to 2nd improved. When I checked the oil I got about a cup out. It takes a very long time (like several hours) for the oil to get through the tiny (6mm?) oil check bolt. I didn't notice anything drastic right away but after driving for a week or so after doing this the second gear notchiness is totally gone. I wonder if the synchros were not grabbing due to the extra oil. Anyhow it shifts real easy from 1-2 even going slow and shifting at low RPMs.

How did you get to the plug while keeping the car level?

This is becoming very interesting. Can someone post a pict. or diagram to show where the 'check bolt' is ? Thanks.

4 jack stands, a pit or a lift.

It's right up front. You can do it with the car on the ground. You kind of have to feel for it but it's real easy to get to. You can see the drain plug for the trans on the driver's side of the trans. Right in front. The level check bolt is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches directly above it. You need a 10mm wrench to remove it. The oil will just kind of drip if it has too much in it. Just let it sit for a few hours and put it back in. Make sure the car is real level. I didn't notice the shift quality change for a while but I can definitel tell now. I've been shifting real slow to try to get it to grab or be notchy like before but it doesn't do it. Pretty cool and pretty simple to do. It's easy to see how they could be over filled too. There is a big fill hole on top but it takes forever for it to come out of the tiny check hole so if the plug were put in when oil first started dripping out there would be too much in there.

Thgis sounds like something that can easily happen at the factory especially since the 6 speed trannies were not something Acura was dealing with on a year-in year-out basis. Chad T if your'e right on this one damn you deserve a big thanks buddy

My theory is that the extra oil prevents the synchros from grabbing properly. Happens a lot when the wrong oil is used. Causes very notchy shifting. One thing though. I didn't notice The better shifting right away. I'm not sure why that is unless the oil had to settle off of something. These are all just ideas I'm throwing out here but the shift quality is better.

Hmm... I've changed my fluid about 4 times (unfortunateley every time the tranny came off)... so surely it wasn't filled the same each time. Did not experience any differences in the shifting.

Yeah it seems weird but the tranny would be easy to overfill. It's an easy thing to check. If it's not too full no oil will come out. Not saying there is a night and day difference or anything but the notchiness at low speeds definitely seems to have gone away to a significant degree. YMMV
