6 speed ....take the plunge?

Dealer told me 8200 out the door to trade in my car and take a 6-speed. Gotta do the math. But sounds ok.....

7500 plus taxes....

No, no navi I was thinking to negotiate that deal for the Navi.

I was waiting while they were checking my alignment...and i strolled onto the showroom floor. Next thing i knew, i was cruisin around in black on black six speed (non navi). I like the short throws....and the car feels like it pulls tons harder then mine. I mean tons!!! What a blast to drive. And the clutch is pretty lite. Oh man.....i am going to be tossin and turnin' now.

for 8200 bucks, you could make your CL-S smoke any 6 speed any day of the week.....8200 would cover the CT supercharger and that newly mentioned 300hp upgrade for 2500 bucks and also a set of headers thrown in the mix too most likely....with that combo youll be pounding a hell of alot more power than a 6 speed (unless a 6 speed was equally modded of course) but sheesh, i mean i think this is a no brainer....8200 bucks will go a loooog way on a 2001-2002 CL-S...think about that...you could have a 13 or 12 second CL-S for 8200 or a new 6 speed 14 second CL-S with shitty wheels, no classy chrome and ugly cheap plastic inserts in place of your driving lights....

lets also not forget the ADDITIONAL HUGE LOSS you take right off the bat when comes to resale/trade in value..that 6 speed will lose 3-5 grand of its value almost immediately..that brings your loss to well over 10,000....

Well, with enough money you could make a 1985 Ford Escort beat a 2003 CL 6-Speed in a straight line.
I understand your point about straight line acceleration, but there are other factors to consider.

I, like others here, bought or traded for the manual Tranny for the joy of driving.
If that’s what he’s looking for, the 8000 is better spent on the trade.

Plus if you add all that crap to a WEAK SlushBox, there’s no guarantee how long she’ll stay running.

i can agree with you for the most part there shawn, i mean its very true, the whole experience of driving a 6 speed is something no mods on a 5 speed auto can duplicate...and it also doesnt seem realistic to try to change a 5 speed auto CL-S to a 6 speed CL-S....so i guess it comes down to if the dude that started this thread is more interested in speed and power and 1/4 mile times OR if hes willing to take a significant financial loss simply for a new transmission..its up to each individual i suppose..and im sure you know what my view is...i remember months ago tearing into you about the financial loss on the 6 speed...hehehehe either way, you guys just gotta do what makes you happy...i for one am perfectly happy with my slush box

smitty, in your defense you got rid of your stock 2003 wheels which is an absolute MUST for the 2003..i dont think there has been one member here to actually prefer the 2003 wheels over the 2002..but i dunno, i dont mean to offend anyone, but no one will ever be able to convince most of us 2001-2002 owners that the lack of chrome and lack of driving lights is an IMPROVEMENT over our cars....most people also dont like the perforated door leather either, most prefer the ruffled look on the 2001-2002..and that plasic-aluminum trim is also something you have to have an aquired taste for, there is definately something classy about wood grain...something fake metal cant recreate....but again, its in the eye of the beholder...

I personally am not a big fan of chrome on a sporty car. So i like the 2003 look better. The wheels.......eh....what are ya gonna do...you can't win em' all, right? Maybe after droppin it they'll look better.

To each his own. The part about llosing money when i drive the 2003 off the lot is killin me. That is a really good point. So i am losing WAY more then 7000 bucks.

I dont mind the rims...I like them...maybe not as much as the 01-02 but I still like them. I also like the lack of chrome on the out side...and as for the money you loose as soon as you drive the car off the lot...its not an out of pocket loss...you will loos money on any car you drive off the lot. No driving lights...who cares...they sucked ass anyway...thats just a good excusse to get some real ones.

Myself, if I were to trade the CL-S in for a "more funner" car, it would be the new 350Z. If I got serious, I'd wait until I drove the Z, and then decide.

I like the 2003 rims. I've said it before. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they're the greatest things in the world, but not bad. I wasn't overly impressed with the prior model's rims either.

I like the chrome-less doors and rear view mirrors as well.

$7000 + tax sounds reasonable. Two questions that you need to ponder:
  1. Is $7K an appropriate amount of depreciation for the time and miles that you've owned your car? I would guess that it's close, you lose $3-5K driving off the lot.
  2. Can you afford it?(financing too!)
If you can answer yes to #2, then #1 is just a judgement call. It doesn't sound like the deal is too far off from being pretty good.

As others have mentioned, if you are into modding your ride, you may consider the costs involved as well.

I really like this six speed. I wouldn't (didn't) have bought the CL-S without it.

People always say this, but you only lose money if you plan on keeping the car for only a few years. If you intend on keeping your 6 speed for a while, you do not lose that money, so don't let that be a factor. Bottom line is that manual cars are a totally different and to most people more fun experience than are auto cars. Add to that the factor that the CL auto tranny blows and that if you kept it long enough you would probably have to spend money to replace it (after warranty expires), that might actually save you some money.

If you can afford it and like having total control over your car, go for it.

Nice article Shawn S. Brings a :'( to my eyes.

Funny reference - a friend recently transitioned from a Porsche 911 to a Jaguar XKR. He got the Jaguar for the style and supercharged power, but he lamented about loss of his stick.

if automatic cars are for fucking pussies than why will an automatic corvette tear your asshole apart no matter what the hell anybody could possibly do to your 6 speed CL...6 speed and 260 hp vs auto and 400 hp....wow, i wonder what would happen and thats just one example...there are many many other automatic cars that could toast a cl-s 6 speed...look at some of the old muscle cars, they will wail on any acura 6 speed....lets try to not get too pompus here...jeeezz

I could use that same argument in the opposite: why spend ANYTHING on the first model run of a car? It might have rattles...

You're comparing apples with oranges. Why don't you compare a 400hp Corvette ATX against the same with an MTX? Any question which will kick pompous butt?

Dude, it was in STUFF Magazine. What do you expect, an award winning author???

It was basically saying that Stick is for people that are more into the driving experience.
Nothing about being faster or better was ever mentioned.

Why must you always get into a pissing match with me and some others here?

Uhh...here's a new one:

when i bought my 2k1 CLS from the dealership, the sales guy was an Iranian fella. Nice guy and all and this is his quote:

"In my country, only the HANDICAPPED drive car with automatic transmission"

The point? I dunno, just saying that I don't think I'll ever go back to owning a car with automatic tranny....that's coming from a dude that's been driving since day 1 thru day 4015 with AN AUTOMATIC TRANMISSION vehicle.

What??? I traded in my LEASED '01 CLS(PDG) two years early, with 36,000 miles, that was on a 4 year lease that only allowed 12,000 a year! They paid off my lease and let me drive off with my red 6 speed with the exact same lease with nothing down, same monthly payments, and same buyoff at the end of the lease(which i plan on doing!) BTW i put down $6,000 upon signing of the first gold CLS. I think i got a good deal!

Also, there is nothing wrong with autos. I miss mine a lot! I just get to appriciate the manual when i really open it up! Nothing makes me happier than hearing the "chirp" shifting to 3rd!
