6 Speed Swap

Has anyone considered or done research on swapping a 6 speed in an 01-02 cl-s . Has it been done before . Really considering it cause I don't want to sell my car cause the 03 don't come in sundance gold!!!! Any info would be great . I can get all the parts at work , but cause most of my auto knowledge is pretty much by the book...not to knowledgeable on hacking and shit . I'm also not possible if u can teach the 6 speed ecu to work w/ ur existing immobilizer keys .

Dude, just buy an '03 and repaint it if you love that color so much. Don't get me wrong, I had an '01 PDG too, but i traded it in for a red 6 speed. no choice of color. last one on the lot and I didn't want to wait. next one wasn't coming for 3 months.

This has been discussed a bunch of times. It could be done, with the right amount of $$. However it would be so impractical unless you had the money to through away.

The general consensus is that it isn't worth it. You need too many parts other than the manual tranny, you'd be better off buying an 03.

Sad but true.

some guy was claiming to have swapped an 03 6 speed tranny into a 99 3.0 CL....granted, he never posted any proof and basically fell off the planet. but if thats possible, then doing it in a 2nd gen CL shouldnt be too hard because all the needed parts are available and are a perfect match.....it would be VERY expensive, youd be looking at around 7-10 thousand id bet before all is said and done.

This has come up a bunch of times (try a search). With the right amount of cash anything is possible.. but it would be cheaper to get a 6-speed 2003 and paint it gold.

There's a lot more involved then just the tranny. You'd need to swap out the tranny, add the LSD, swap out the console, ECU and possibly make engine changes since the 6-speed does not have VSA (b/c of the LSD)... all of that and I'm probably forgetting a few things... so in the end.. not worth it.

It would probably cost considerably less to buy an '03 6-Speed and have it painted PDG...

hmmmm. maybe u guys are right . However once u paint a car it never really is the same . I could get all the parts at a relativley cheap price...dunno . Maybe I'll just go w/ the 3.5L swap instead . What is basically involved . just an mdx block and then swap out ur old block , or do u have to modify the mdx block at all...how about all the sensors and shit...is everything the same . I can get a brand new mdx short block for a grand!!!

All the sensors bolt on... however the timing-belt tensioner etc. have to be swapped. The car won't make more than 10hp than with the 3.2block... just a 'shifted' power-band... the only real way to make good power with the extra displacement is with customs rods and pistons...

Interesting...

So when you say 'shifted power-band' do you mean the torque curve? and the 3.5 should give the CL a lot more torque right?

All I can say that its 'shifted'... I have yet to see a 3.5 dyno showing that it really makes anymore power than the 3.2

So can someone make a list of the exact parts I would need to buy from my dealer to do the 3,5l swap . Can I use my stock water pump...exactly what is needed cause I'm really serious . Also will the Comptech headers work w/ the 3.5l block or not . And one other thing , I heard that u have to put the cl pistons on the mdx short block...thus...re-sleeving the mdx block...is this true???

If th ebore is the same or bigger... you don't have to re-sleeve... just hone or maybe bore. Headers fit the head, not the block...so they will bolt-up.. and shouldn't have any clearance issues underneath.

You can try pistons/rods of your choice

Oh yeah...forgot about the headers...duh . Anyways I can get a mdx short block w/ the pistons and crank , rods , etc... allready installed from my dealer . Would I have any clearance problems or should I go w/ aftermarket pistons . Will the power increase still be worth it by using the mdx pistons . Also will the change in compression ratio (if any) affect the car . Sorry if I'm asking so many questions...just really exited about this right now!!!

You can always buy a fully assembled MDX shortblock for like $1100... that's not going to make you 50hp... more like 5-10 being optimistic and a little more torque down low.

If you are going to the extent as to build a motor... spend a little more and do it properly and make the extra 400cc work for you!

In terms of dollar for power value.... its NOT worth it. However, if you build it properly... you have a fantastic foundation to build form!
