6 speed shifter patterns & gas mileage
Hello from Chicago, where premium basically costs $2 a gallon.
being unwilling to deprive my engine of the recommended octane rating, I wanted to save gas at the pump.
I went to a 1>3>6 shift pattern, and it was working well. I could tell I was getting, I think, 26 city, as compared to 21 at best, so far, with just 6,000 on the odo.
Unfortunately, the "slow" setting on the gas pump did not work, and overflowed, so I have no facts to give, as of yet.
Someone else, try this. It does not harm the car. I cannot do it again until my fuel level goes down. Report back to us.
With the two clowns we have running the government, I highly doubt that high gas prices bother them in the least. In fact, they probably endorse it, as they line their pockets.

Just love it when the pump keeps the gas flowing all over the side of our cars. Detroit is about the same, between $1.90 and $2 per gallon for 93 octane.
I'll try that shift pattern next time I fill up...I pretty much only do city driving.

Uh, I thought that's what synchros/rev matching were for. So is a 4->2 downshift bad for the car too? How about a 6->4?

My understanding is that it isn't good. Technically, i can't give you the hard facts. Perhaps i'm wrong. EricL or someboddy shed some light on the issue?
Sychros are there but I always always double clutch when I rev match.

Ah the beloved "Skip Shift". This feature is standard on all LS1 Camaros, and others. It locks you out of 2nd and 3rd and forces you to go into 4th. It has a light on the dash that says "Skip Shift" when it happens. One of the first mods to all LS1s is to eliminate the skip shift. The thing I never understood was, it only came on at low RPMs until 2500 RPMs. It forced you to run the revs up before you could shift into 2nd instead of 4th.![Dunno](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/dunno.gif)
As far as the Acura, good or bad.....
I bought an automatic this time.

I always try to achieve this, but can't ever seem to go a full tank without a heavy foot!!!

If you skip anything, I think 2nd makes the most sense. 1st is so short, you hit 4,000 before you know it. And second is so close you're still at like 3,000 when you let the clutch out. I think 3rd is around 2000 or so. Still plenty of torque to get up to speed before hitting 4th at 3,000 at then cruising. I'm assuming typical 40-50mph streets.

I am going to try this skip shifting thing now also --- now that I think about it this new 6speed tranny of ours is perfect for this skip shifting technique...the ratios seem so close together sometimes I wonder if the ddesigned it with this skip shifting thing in mind sort of

Fuel mileage is all about throttle position first and revs second. The lower you can keep both, the higher the mileage. Skipping gears is OK if your not lugging the motor to the point where you are applying more throttle to accelerate. I knew a guy with an Accord who short shifted at 2,000 rpm but after each shift gave about half throttle to accelerate. This resulted in poor mileage which he didnt understand.
The gearing is close ratio on the 6 speed so skipping can work if no extra throttle is required.
My best tank with the auto is 33. Gas in So cal is now 229 for 91 octane.

I think if you just go easy on the gas and shift at under 3,000 RPM you would accomplish the same thing as “skip shifting”.
Honestly, in my opinion it’s not worth doing all that just to save a buck a tankfull.

I played around skipping 2nd today. It takes a long time for the revs to drop down from 4000 to 2000 when you clutch and pull out of 1st. Of course you can let out the clutch in 3rd before that but if you jump the gun too much its kinda harsh. Might take some practice.

I never "skip shift" while upshifting. I will do it down shifting only when i have been coasting long enough that my speed is now so low that 4th is more appropriate than 5th or 2nd is more appropriate than 3rd etc. In these situations speeds and RPMS are so low that there is no stress on the synchos.
Under normal everyday driving (not performance) your rpms should be staying between 2000 and 3500. If you are not in this range some of you guys should go to stick shift school. Also if you want to go from 1st the 3rd to 6th maybe you really want an automatic. Seems crazy to me.

A little clarification from the author. Where I live (eight miles northwest of O'Hare), I consider it crowded. On my 12 miles to work, there are 27 stoplights, but is is possible to hit 65 for some long stretches. And I wouldn't do this to the car if it would hurt anything.
I came from a 2002 RSX-S, and was used to getting 28 mpg per tankful with ease, and I once got 43.4 on the highway. My best with the CL-S, which I love, has been 21 and 25 on a 200 mile trip, no A/C and frequent use of cruise. If there is anything I don't like about this car (not used to is probably more accurate), it is the gas mileage.
Granted, I didn't buy this $32,000 missle to use only half the capability it has, and it isn't fun to drive this way, but with my math, an extra five mpg works out to about eighty extra miles, or about $6 per tank. I have 6,000 on the odo. I am no prude, either. As a CFI, I like getting the maximum performance out of an airplane, and my car also. An no offense to the auto crowd, but an auto ain't my style.
I think gas prices are not through rising just yet, and when the war starts, it will go higher. Remember, big oil sits in the white house, and I haven't heard a peep about high gas prices from them.
For fun, check out the thread "wetter water" currently on this board, and "best octane booster", probably archived now. Both are hilarious, and make sure you clike on all links embedded in either. Thanks for your input!
