42 offset RH C2's don't fit?!

I order my setup from PrecisionInstallations in NY after they give me a good price (18" w/ Kumho Ecsta 712's). I put on the left rear no problem, I try and put on the left front and it scraps on the caliper. I didn't drive it more than 4 inches b/c I just knew it was going to scrape. Same deal on right front, no problem w/ either rear wheel. I talked to the supplier several times today and he sez he's delivered this offset to numerous people w/ a cl-s--no problem. My question is this, recently I had my rotors and brake pads replaced under warranty b/c of the well-known problems we all have. I wonder if the rotor and pad are thicker by just a millimer or two causing the caliper to be open more than usual? I just can't figure this out. Precision is going to send me a 3 mm spacer for each front wheel, 1 mm would probably be enough. I just wanted to get people's input on this and also warn them of this problem should they be in the same set of circumstances I'm in.

Thoughts??

My rims are +45......I don't see how +3 MM can make a difference

The spacer should fix it.. the C2's are deep and that is why you are having this problem (especially after new brake pads). you can take a dremel tool and polish a bit off your caliper (just about 1 mm or so..)

I know a guy had to shave his down because it was so close to rubbing.

Can you take pics when you get them on, so we all can see? I want to see what it looks like on your car with comptech springs... Thanks!

if it's only a 1mm clearance problem you could just grind the calipers a little bit, then paint them w/ caliper paint.

that's what i would do.

And that would probably be the best solution if you don't want to risk spacers...

I have the 19in C3 RHs with a +42 offset, no rubbing what so ever.

If the wheels were 42mm offset before, they'll be 39mm with that 3mm spacer. That might be tight on the outer edge. I'd probably do what mattg suggested.

I had RH C2 on my CLS and the shop where I purchased the rims from supplied spacers. When the spacers were in place, the spokes of the wheels just BARELY cleared the calipers.

I thought about doing what mattg suggested and grind down the calipers a bit then paint them (which I was going to do anyway). Problem was, I didn't know if that would compromise the caliper at all. Curious, if you add 3 mm spacer, wouldn't that equal 45 offset and not a 39?? I only need about the width of two pieces of paper for clearance.

Thanks for the responses, now gotta go. Headin' to Montreal for the Grand Prix in a couple hours and I cannot wait to hear those V10's screamin, smell the brakes cookin' and the fuel burnin' !!!

I had to file an imperfection out of my driver's side caliper when I put mine on...

The brake pads were about 25% worn, and the wheel BARELY cleared the caliper. You couldn't slide a credit card through the gap.

I'm sure that you problem is caused by the new pads. I know I am going to have to grind part of the caliper when I have new pads put on.

That +42mm offset means the mounting surface is 42mm from the center of the wheel (towards the outside of the wheel). The spacer is bringing the mounting surface back towards the center of the wheel (less positive offset from the center) so you'd subtract that negative distance (the spacer) from your positive distance (the wheel's offset) resulting in the +39mm offset.

If you got the 7.5" width wheel, that alone is moving the outer edge of the wheel out a 1/4" (~6mm) from stock, plus with the 16mm offset difference from stock to the combo above (55-39=16), the outer edge of your *wheel* will be sticking out over 22mm further than stock.

Since the 225 width of your tire is 10mm wider than stock, that's adding another 5mm of width on top of everything else (10/2=5mm per side). That means the outer edge of your *tire* will be sticking out more than 27mm further than stock. That's a little over a full inch closer to the fenders.

if you only need to grind the caliper a mm or less you will be fine. teh caliper are pretty thick. using spacers would suck.

i had to grind over an 1/8" off my calipers to get the dayton adaptors on my astro van. no problem.
