3rd gen TL tranny sawp in a 2nd gen CL/TL?

has anyone heard of anyone doing this? i was contacted by a pretty reputable person on AZ and he told me about a member on here that do those swaps. ive talked to him and he seems like he knows his stuff but i wanted to get some input from my fellow cl guys. he has stated that hes done about 3 or 4 of these swaps and that they are a direct bolt up you just have to transfer the sub harness and range switch from your old tranny. i mean this would be great becuase we wouldnt have to worry about tranny problems anymore but im a little skeptical about this. i wanted to see what you guys think about this. i feel like if this was that simple this would have been done long ago.

from what I've heard it CAN BE done. But you will need a new tranny ecu and a BUNCH OF OTHER SHIT.

I looked into it when i toasted my original tranny and was told it's just not worth it by my 2 acura mechanics.... who could do it, but simply was going to be WAY too much money.

from what ive been reading and talking to others the issue is with the MT the AT is a straight forward swap.

i'm just relaying what I was told buy 2 different acura mechanics from different places.

OBV anyone can be wrong.

But if I had to guess I'd have to say they are probably pretty close if not bang on the money.

Tranny ecu is different FOR SURE, that's a given. and who knows about mounts and what not... u'd need to see a tl in person to compare the differences/similarities.

I'll be honest man I had a Ford probe with JDM parts all up in the motor and flywheel and diff tranny, and ecu and blah blah etc. and was just headaches.

If you can get it all put together guaranteed to work... then I'd be more inclined to get it done. But that's a rare thing to have done... no?

I got my tranny rebuilt for $1980 cash, and that's all new internals, tq converter which i specified, switches cleaned, new filters, new front trans mount and new low hold gear. And the guy has done TONS of these trannys and he said he's has MANY of his rebuild trannys out there with 200000kms on them since he rebuilt them, so it's not the tranny u gotta worry about.

it's keeping it clean (i mean the fluid). It's supposed to be changed every 40-50K but they say 96000kms to compete with GM and shit when really that's shit clogs everything up and then no fluid goes to ur 2nd and 3rd clutch pack and u FRY ur gears and tranny locks.

So basically, if u rebuild it right and keep on the fluid changes (and external trans filter under the airbox) it'll be fine..

Just dont drive the car like it owe u money.

I'd just HUNT for a reputable mechanic to rebuild ur tranny who's hopefully done plenty of them before so it'll, be a for sure thing.

^ remember diddy has a S/C with HBP, so obviously the tranny is going to have extra stress.

i remember reading that the internals from the 3rd gen can be put into your tranny. Don't quote me though. I would try and talk to NVA-AV6...here or on another site

I say it would be a sweet way to solve our stupid stock tranny from dying. But it's all a matter of how much $ it'll cost.

And for me... 1980 was quite a nice number and I am more than happy with the rebuild... I've even gone to the race track since. lol shifts like butter

like my mechanic told me (who's been an acura mechanic since acura became a company). the trannys last. IF you switch the fluid all the time... (as in yearly).. and why not, think about your engine oil every 5000 kilometers? and tranny every 96000 kilometers acura says?.... that sounds like BS to me when I stopped and thought about it too.

In case you wanna know who the heck are these so called mechanics, here's the story:

At first I was skeptical about all this acura talk with this guy in particular.. Long story short I met the first guy when I bought my car I took it to acura erin mills in Mississauga to get it a full makeover. and then ran into my buddy (now). then when tranny blew, buddy 1 sent me to buddy 2 (buddy 1's mentor) the guy who rebuilt my shyt and does all sorts of crazy work on the side. if anyone local needs there shyt fixed to oem of aftermarket specs. he'll do it all, and for a good price and no bs. Superchargers, turbos, trannys...on any honda, acura, and he does porsches too. lol and has comptech hook ups for new parts, nothing crazy but, not a rip off by a long shot

PURE FLUKE I ran into them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However if you cannot find a decent price on the rebuild from a place u know will do good work, and trust. I'd go with the TL swap if it ends up being cheaper.

But remember when you do something the installer hasn't done it b4 you must accept the possibility of unforseen problems. And frankly that would be a bitch if this is ur daily driver

i wouldnt believe what acura mechanics say about swaps. they are trained to repair vehicles and usually not swaps.

i had everyone at the acura dealership tell me there was no way to swap the 6 speed

anyway. the 3rd gen tranny bolts up just fine. u have to use ur range switch from ur cl and swap sensors.

accept the acura mechanic I am talking about can swap a 911 motor into a boxer!. and has a TRACK READY NSX turboed up the ass.

And he's been working on acuras since they became a company in 1983. which means he's been working on cars since b4 I existed.

This is work on the side i am talking about NOT through the STEALERSHIP...

OBV they would tell u a 6 speed is not possible cause they won't do it and they wouldn't make nearly the same amount of money off you.

I'm not saying for a second my guy knows everything inside and out. But if there's one guy that knows shyt about ALL acuras.. it's him for sure

as a matter of fact he is the ONLY guy i've brought my car to (whether it's a company or person) and not had to worry, and not been screwed over in some fashion. Basically he's the only guy I'll deal with from now on. And i've been to countless shops all over the GTA over the past 5 years. So, either I am an unluky fuk, or this guy is for real.

I'd love to see this tranny swap done though...

I should ask my mechanic how much it'd cost for him to do it... And that'd give a good estimation as to how hard it is

^lol...alright, we get it. Your mechanic is very good. Diddy is trying to find out info about the tranny. We're talking about a guy who does monster builds and has first hand knowledge about the topic at hand. We're not talking about a guy who knows a guy.

lol i was thinking the same thing. im heading down to VA to meet up with NVA-AV6 probably on Monday to do a couple of diagnostic checks before we do anything. then depending on what we find im going to scoop up a 3g tranny and do the swap.

i wasnt asking them to do it for me. they all denied that it was even possible with my 99 engine.

its great that you found a good mechanic but that doesnt mean he knows everything there is to know about what swaps can be done. proof being what you posted about having to swap harnesses and all that jazz.

it would not suprise me that the transmissions from the 04-08 cars would fit (excluding the newer type S) since the 04-05 TL had the same trans problems and this resulted in a new case design for mid 05+ cars that was retrofitted to the previous gen rebuilt transmissions.

^^^^^^ rim set #5??? as in... 5 frigging different rim sets??? DAMN

do you go over bumps like a priest sunday driving, like I do??.. cause that's how u make sure ur alignment and suspension and rims don't get out of wack. I found out I had my stockies bent to shit when i got the car and that's from city driving and curb kissing.

I could only imagine if u hit a massive pot hole.

B4 this wasn't an issue as my previous car was very light so the car's weight wouldn't screw itself up as much. But with this BOAT i drive now, I can only imagine the strain of the cars weight making a perfect recipe for an array of bad things to happen.

that's y i got the winter rims and tires on so I don't have to worry about anything really. accept my handling is like I have NO sway bars.. thanks dunlop graspic ds-2!! lol

on a side note northern VA has some nice cars. there were alot of modded cars riding around. i saw a blue 3g TL with gold rims at a gas station and then a silver cl on the highway with exhaust. i wonder if they were AZ members.

Yea, NoVa and Va Bch have some nice cars, but Ive not seen one single modded Acura in Richmond. I know theres a few on the forum, but I havent seen them.

I finally saw a member out in Va Bch though. It was a white 3G TL-S with the A-Spec kit, lowered, and a black roof. It was sick.

Acura swap from an 03 TL into a 03 CL base

It's a direct bolt but the TL tranny has a cone shape plug (with a gear at the smaller end) and I was told was a speedometer sensor or something like that. The tranny that I pulled from the CL looks exactly the same except the hole is plugged where the cone would go in the TL's tranny. I would assume that since the CL hole is plug it has no use for it, so I can just close of the TL's hole.

Does anyone know otherwise, where is the "speedometer sensor" in the CL? Should I swap all the sensors out? even though everything is the exact same place and has the exact same parts (except the sensor of course).

P.diddy already did the swap and had been running it for awhile. I just did a swap with a 07 av6 tranny. All you have to swap is the entire cooler/warmer filter assembly on the top under the intake, the range switch, and the small third and fourth gear pressure switch harness. If you have a cl-p you will have to loop the power steering rack if you have a type s you don't have to worry about it.

Not sure although you can use either. I reused mine from my old transmission because they only had like 5,000 miles on them and the ones on the transmission I got had broken clips.

Ah gotcha. I'll make sure that the switches are the same part number before I switch them over.
