Question 30,000 Bore + Nueralized Piston's = 3.6L to 3.7L

So I got in a talk yesterday with an older guy he said he's been drag racing pro for 27 yrs. He does all his own engine work and has all the equipment. So he said he would do im not quite sure what all this means but: a 30,000 bore and nueralize the pistons to larger diameter for $50 a hole and $25 a piston and that would bring my engine up to around 3.6L or 3.7L liter and he would tweak the prom in the ECU. Is this old guy out of his mind... For some reason he lead me to belive it though. But there goes my warranty if I do it right?

out of his mind... if he knows how to "tweak the prom in the ecu" then he must haver $20,000 honda equipment designed entirely to edit the ecu.

Thats kinda what I was thinking.. I knew this guy was a scatter brain. So the prom is impossible but the bore is plossible maybe. Its just so much cheaper then the normal 3.5L swap.

cheaper? i never heard someone want to go with cheaper when it involves opening up your motor and challenging the integrity and reliability of it. the 3.5 doesn't have to be expensive.

That is very true... I actually totally agree, if you want it done right or if you want it done for cheap are 2 very differant things. Good call CleanCL

I have 2.3 with a f23 and my heads are bored out I don't know what the 30,000 it's usually done by mm but you will really feel it. Dyno'd out about 35 hspwr to the wheel. Good luck on gas you will suck up mad gas.

Knurling a piston is rolling a diamond shaped pattern into the piston skirt that raises little spots to reduce the clearance between the piston and the cylinder wall. It is usually done to a wornout motor to avoid having to replace the pistons when the cylinder is honed and the rings replaced....works quite well on low rpm engines like lawnmowers and such. If you are boring .030" you really need to get pistons that fit.

The price he quoted you sounds about right for the knurl and bore and likely does not include the labor to dissassemble the engine and put it back together.

There isn't any room in the J32 block to bore out the cylinders. The walls are so close together as it is. There's no room for substantial increase.

This guy has no clue what he's talking about. Sorry.

the guy is not entirely crazy...he just doesn't understand this motor.

it can be bored for OEM O.S. pistons which are .025" over

because of open deck you cannot bore more. most blocks are closed deck.

PROM- is programmable read only memory...meaning that yes you can TWEAK it but as others pointed out you need software on OB2 models.

just do a piston swap or something.

Or how about just do bolt-ons and pick up about 40whp and be happy with it without going broke

I had started a project to make a 3.7L out of the J32A2, but this did require a crankshaft change including oversized pistons. You can't bore the hell out of the block and maintain integrity on the cylinder walls.
