Is 3" all around too much?

I am looking into a 3" cat-back exhaust for our cars. I read up on the Greddy cat back and they only have a 60mm pipe, translated thats only 2.3", not even a 2.5 . Some people also said that 3" maybe alittle too excessive on our cars w/o a Turbo or SC? I can understand seeign a loss in back-pressure, but wouldn't aftermarket mufflers cover the loss of back pressure?

No. Keep it where it's at. 3'' will cause you to lose alot of low end.

Actually...the mufflers don't do much but free up back pressure.....stick with the Greddy if you want a catback...anything over 60mm or 2 1/4" piping on a N/A non-v8, is not worth it....

Would the use of 3" also cause missfires?

And about the mufflers, if I were to install a muffler box with a tip that had a 2.25" neck into a 3"tip wouldn't that give me enough back pressure?

get custom cats, its cheaper. I cant justify paying 800+ for greddy if you can get the same gains yourself.

Its really only the mufflers that help....if you look at the B-pipe on the car...it is nearly straight back...

2001CL,

As for the cat, as we both know we have no more emissions. But I am totally against runnign without a cat all the time. If I were to have a custom exhaust made I would have the cat replaced with a removable straight pipe. That way when I got to the track I can remove the cat and replace it with a straight pipe.

moomaster_99,

The exhaust thatI am thinking of is of larger diameter, with the resonator removed, and plugging the ends with performance mufflers.

But like I said before would a 2.25" neck on a 3" tip be enough back pressure?

Keep the resonator too....otherwise, your exhaust will be pretty loud....and as for tips...they just make noise....no effect on flow at all.

Well that's sort of a logical falacy since if the note is changing, so is the flow, but it's true it's not enough to matter.

Oh I was just pointing out that it's logically impossible to say the flow hasn't changed when the sound has changed but nothing new was done to the engine.

Don't worry about it, just trying to make sure moomaster isn't defying logic since he has trouble with that sometimes.

Of course. Everyone has already said that - 3" is pointless unless it's forced-induction or a V8.
