3.5 CL- S Conversion

Hi I own a automatic 01 CL-S with comptech supercharge, headers and even port and polish my intake manifold. I even got a upgrade pulley for the supercharged kit. I took it to the track and it only ran 14.2 @99mph (track temp 90F, TCS off, 235/40/18 es100 tires with a reaction time of 0.547). I come to this site and see people with 6sp running 13 with a MDX engine. I know a guy in a 6sp with Comptech headers and ice box that ran 15@91mph all day. It just doesn't add up giving up 20hp and gainning only 13 ft lb of torque will make his car run that much faster (MDX 240hp 245ftlb torque). I myself have a 3.5 MDX engine sitting at work Just waiting for me to install it. The reason it is still sitting there, was that I am not very optimistic about how much that engine is going to help me. I need someone with or know someone with a 3.5 CL-S to tell me why that conversion make such a different. Yes, I planned to keep my supercharge with the 3.5 engine. Sorry guys I might sound mean but I am really confuse. I can't tell if people are telling the truth or just bullshitting on line.

Its not a complete swap but from what I understand its an MDX bottom with different pistons and other stuff. TypeR has one type of 3.5 liter upgrade and has run a 13.7 a few times in his auto CLS. Dean has a different 3.5 liter that seems to be more boost friendly since it has a lower compression ratio but by itself might not be as strong as the other 3.5 that typeR has. I'll let the experts chime in!

Actually a 14.2@99 is pretty darn good in 90 degre temps. That is at least a half second quicker and 5 MPH higher than most NA vehicles with I/H would run in those conditions.

You might want to add an intercooler to that SC.

Does he have exhaust as well? It's a bit on the low side for what he has, but not completely out of the range of reality. He might need a bit more practice.

Good luck on your power search btw.

damn...not sure why he was only trapping 91mph??? maybe the altitude played a factor....i trapped 100 in 80degree weather, but who knows....

Maybe he never shifted out of 3rd and kept banging the rev limiter...

If you already have a S/C then you'll need to change the compression of your motor to run the 3.5L upgrade along with it. PM or email DeanblackCLS on this forum for more info

I ran the car at California Speedway in Fontana. The track couldn't be more that a few hundred feet above sea level so I don't think altitude will be a factor. The guy with the 6sp ran 5 times and I really doubt that he will keep it in 3rd all 5 times. I think if you stayed in 3rd you will only reach about 87mph. Oh, I don't have a muffler don't want to attract cops.

I have a CL-S. sorry I had the VSA off. I am planning to put it together soon. I don't think I will have problems with detonation because I will have lower compression, Plus I am running a lot of fuel pressure when I am flooring it thank to comptech FMU. I am just worry that it will be slower than what I have now. That will pissed me off bad, spending so much money and time on something that doesn't work.

I've asked Dean about the 3.5L conv. and 91 octane gas. He says detonation would not be a problem with a S/C or turbo as long as you get the lower CR option.

Hey SG i think the temp played a big part i have a 6-spd with comptech icebox and at 88deg i can run a 14.6 all day, but when it was a 100deg i could not break 15 so thats allmost a half second and when every one braggs about their awsome times the temp is under 60deg so i think you time is really good!!!

I am boosting 6 psi with my superchage and my engine is not liking it when the temperature goes below 75. It actually pings a little when it gets cold I think I don't have enough fuel. Can I ask all you people what kind of ET times and MPH are you people running. Sometime if you hook up right both your ET time and MPH are low. sly1types what is your MPH different when you are running 15 compare to 14.6? thanks

I assume the pinging starts at about 5000 RPM and lasts to about 5500 - 6000 RPM??

There are other threads to follow on this forum regarding this matter and I hope to have a resolution soon. I solved this through another, albeit simple, method. But others have not seen this issue. We will know more on this matter within a week.

One question though, what is your confidence or ability level in working on cars?? Are you performing the work or a mechanic??

Actually the pinging start when VTEC engaged and go all the way to redline, so I would say form 5000-7000 rpm. But I don't hear it all the time and racing fuel didn't help. I am a Techincian for Acura so I am doing all the work myself. I have always been around N/A engine and am kind of new to Force induction engine.

does boost spike at all ...could it be the ESM or maybe the opposite does boost drop off and the esm for that moment cause alot of advance?

Forget the ESM, it is just a voltage clamp.

The boost does drop a little which is one of the causes for the pinging. Subsequently the fuel pressure drops at a point we don't want it to. By the boost dropping indicates that engine is pulling the air in very well. But since all fuel enrichement is done by way of the FPR we are limited.

The factory ECU timing is advanced at the VTEC changeover point and dwindles off past 6k revs. This is the other reason for the pinging.

However, if we had control over the injector pulse width based on RPM we could do away with this knock and run even more boost. So we are waiting on the UniChip with our fingers crossed.

Sounds good and similar to what others have seen, albeit not till redline.

Have you monitored the fuel pressure and recoreded what the values are at various boost levels and RPM??

Also, as Smitty mentioned, unplugging the IMRC has helped smooth things out. Let us know what the fuel pressure numbers are; this will help in the analysis.

Not readily available. The regulator and dampener are one assembly and the lines to the rails use crimped connections. However, the regulator is threaded into the dampener body but what those threads are I am unsure but I believe they are standard. You could find out what the threads are and make up a coupling with a port on it.

The Comptech SC kit removes the stock FPR and in its place a fitting is threaded in with the other side being a -6 AN fitting. From there a pre-made house is routed to the new rising rate FPR.

See the below picture for what I am referring to; this actually shows my fuel pressure gauge sensor installed but you can see the -AN fitting to the left. You might be able to contact Comptech and ask them what those threads are.

Hmm... you live in So Cal? Then why don't we meet up one day and you can try your car against mine - FI vs. NA and you'll know how fast your car is... because I know how fast my car is.

PM me... I can help you make your car run 13's or 12's or whatever you want.

Thanks scalbert. That gave me an Idea, I think all I need is a T fitting between the FPR fitting and damper body! In your picture I see that you have 2 fuel hose, one above the sensor and one below. I know one will have to go to the FPR, but where is the other hose going to?

oh, allmotor yea we can meet. Maybe we can
asked a few more CL owner around this area
to come along. Hell maybe we can cruise to Fontana
(California Speedway)and Drag Race each other.
I am in Hacienda Hts area.

I have an additional injector (actually a cold start valve) which is shown at the very bottom of the picture. This is opened when boost is above 3 PSI and when the VTEC oil control solenoid is opened (4800 Revs and up).

Sounds good.. next meet I suppose. BTW, I wasn't trying to sound like an ass... just that this thread started off with your disappointment at the track and what you think you should run vs. what you have run. I just re-read my post in the context of your current discussion and it was completeley out of place!

damn I would like to see your set up but to bad you are in GA. I am currently looking for some 27lbhr injector for my car, but I have never thought of installing a 7th injector in my CL. Is the cold start valve or injector something like the injector on a wet NOS system?. Can I ask how many psi are you boosting and is your CL a 6sp or auto?. Allmotor do you know when is the next meet? and I am not diappointed at the performance of my car, I just think some people are not being truethful about their ET times or they are running at 40F temp with a 60mph tail wind? Anyway let me know when is the next meet. Maybe a couple of my friends will like to tag along. One has a supercharge NSX with Type R gear ratio and the other has a brand new 6sp G35 coupe just like what you order.

The cold start valve was used on many early EFI vehicles to supplement fuel on cold starts. This one is off of a mid 80's BMW 5-Series.

I am running only about 6 PSI boost right now on my 6-Speed CL-S.

My 3.5L swap is finally done. I will have some pictures posted on this site by Tuesday. This is what I think about the new engine. I drove my car all day today without the supercharged. I just want to know if the 3.5L swap made any different. I felt the 3.5L engine has slightly more torque at low rpm , but seems to loose hp at high rpm. It might be a little faster than a stock 3.2 CL-S, but I am not sure. All I know is that it is definitely not faster than a stock CL-S with a supercharged. I then installed the supercharger and I think that made a different. With VSA off I could not keep the tires from breaking loose even when cruising at 30 mph in first and flooring it. It could have been the weather because it was 9 PM and temp was at 60. I will try to get it dyno next week and let you people know if I gain anything from the swap. My pinging is still there, so I guess I am going to try disconnecting the IMRC.
